Guillermo del Toro hopes to leave his mark on the TV landscape with the premiere of The Strain on FX tonight, a modern day vampire tale he first concocted as a book series with Chuck Hogan and now brings to the small screen with the aid of Hogan and executive producer Carlton Cuse (Lost).
The Strain arrives tonight riding a wave of hype that has been building up for months. Guillermo del Toro, already an accomplished filmmaker in the thriller/horror genre, not only co-wrote the series premiere but also directs it. His name adds gravitas that few other filmmakers could.
The jist of tonight’s The Strain premiere episode ‘Night Zero’ is that an airplane goes completely dark shortly after landing at JFK international airport from Berlin, Germany. A large contingent of various law enforcement and other agencies arrive on the scene, and ultimately two members of the CDC are the first to board and make a grisly discovery.
The Strain is best described as a modern day vampire thriller approached as a study in epidemiology and fueled by a hero and villain from our past. It may not be as over the top or shocking as FX’s American Horror Story, but it’s certainly not for the squeamish.
