HBO Live Stream Service HBO NOW Coming Exclusively to Apple Devices in April

HBO Live Stream

HBO took the stage at today’s Apple event in San Francisco to confirm a Wall Street Journal report from last week that the new HBO live streaming service is called HBO NOW and that it will launch in April 2015 on Apple TV.

Adding to that report, HBO and Apple announced that HBO Now will work exclusive on Apple TV, Apple iPad and Apple iPhone devices at launch. HBO is working with other distribution partners on cutting deals, however at launch the only place you will be able to access HBO NOW is on an Apple device.

HBO NOW marks the first time that the pay-TV HBO channel will be available to purchase outside of a cable or satellite package. The cost for HBO NOW is $14.99 with the first month free if you sign up in April through Apple i.e. on an Apple device, and you will be able to access it via an HBO NOW app or at HBONOW.com. I recommend visiting the site to join the free email list being offered if you’re interested in joining HBO NOW when it becomes available.

HBO has confirmed that HBO NOW will carry similar programming as HBO GO including over 2,000 titles to choose from online. The April launch is expected to become before April 12, the day that HBO premieres Game of Thrones Season 5.

While this is a great first step toward appealing to cord cutters, I expect HBO will sign on additional distributors outside of the Apple ecosystem once the exclusive window with Apple shuts. Right now we do not know when that will be.
