Watch 2013 Emmy Awards Online

The 2013 Emmy Awards tonight could turn into a celebration of AMC’s Breaking Bad if the beloved drama is able to sway votes considering the series finale will premiere a week from tonight. Neil Patrick Harris will host the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California tonight on September 22, and also serve as one of the show’s producers. Leading this year’s Emmys in nominations is FX’s drama American Horror Story: Asylum with 17 total nods. Running a close second is HBO’s Game of Thrones with 16 nominations, including best drama series. In that category, many eyes will be on the Netflix web-only series House of Cards to see if it can win an Emmy and become the first Netflix streaming series to do so.

AMC’s Breaking Bad is the favorite to take home the Emmy for Best Drama despite tough competition from Game of Thrones, Homeland, Downton Abbey, House of Cards and Mad Men. If any show other than Breaking Bad wins then it will be considered an upset.

Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad is the favorite to take home the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama. Kevin Spacey might have a legitimate shot for House of Cards, but it will be hard to top Cranston with Breaking Bad on the verge of bowing out.

In the Best Actress in a Drama category, Claire Danes for Homeland is a fairly safe pick, though I like Vera Farmiga in Bates Motel as well. Danes gets to portray a character written to achieve the highest level of drama so she’s going to be tough to beat as long as she’s in that role and the writers give her electric material to work with.

For the top Comedy Series, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family are the two favorites headed into tonight. I personally don’t think Girls has a chance, and Louie is hilarious, but doesn’t quite have the mass appeal of the show’s it is up against.

Tonight’s 2013 Emmys will pay tribute to several lost talents over the past year including James Gandolfini for The Sopranos, Cory Monteith for Glee, Gary David Goldberg as a Family Ties producer, Jean Stapleton for All in the Family, and Jonathan Winters for Mork and Mindy. The tribute will be joined by Don Cheadle taking a look back at the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and how television covered the tragedy.

The Emmy Awards will begin at 8pm EST / 5pm PST and be televised in high definition on CBS. Most of the free live online streaming coverage related to the Emmys will be backstage just after awards are presented and accepted. You can follow the official CBS Emmys backstage camera here, where you can also keep up with the red carpet show if that interests you.
