Ubisoft Partners with New Regency to Produce and Distribute Assassin’s Creed Movie

Ubisoft Partners with New Regency to Produce and Distribute Assassin's Creed MovieUbisoft has partnered with New Regency for their Assassin’s Creed movie with Michael Fassbender attached in a bid to fast-track the film into production.

Under the arrangement, New Regency will produce and distribute the film for Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the film and television arm of Ubisoft that wet their feet with Disney’s big budget flop Prince of Persia. Work on the Assassin’s Creed script is said to be getting underway “immediately” though who will be responsible for penning it remains to be seen. Ubisoft will “maintain control of key elements of the movie’s creative direction,” often a sticking point in these types of deals that never pan out.

New Regency recently worked with Fassbender on Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and seems fully committed to his work as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors. Fassbender’s early attachment to the project likely played a key role in the deal with Ubisoft.

It’s nice to finally see one of these high-profile video game to film adaptations finally get going. So many have been swirling around in development hell for the past decade that they have been a black mark on the untapped adaptation potential.

Assassin’s Creed 3 and Assassin’s Creed: Liberation are the next titles in the franchise, both of which will be released on October 30, 2012.
