The long-rumored Sony Playstation 3 exclusive has a genre and a name, and the full reveal is now confirmed to make its appearance at the Spike 2011 Video Game Awards.
The new game is called The Last of Us and looks to be based in a post-apocalyptic world. Something health-related has caused the near-extinction of mankind judging by the short teaser trailer, but what exactly that is remains a mystery.
There’s several different ways this game could potentially develop. Sony might be trying to tap into the zombie craze and go the Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead route. Or, they could go more the Fallout FPS route and have players running around in a post-apocalyptic world.
I’d like to see The Last of Us play more like Uncharted 3 with some Heavy Rain mixed in. Blasting away at zombies or other humans mutated into something else is old hat. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but the teaser imagery with the ant makes me think this game has the potential to be something more than mindless violence. Maybe part of the plot is finding a cure for the culprit that ravaged the planet.

The Spike 2011 VGAs premiere this Saturday, December 10 at 8pm EST/5pm PST.
