Sony Teases Possible Playstation 4 Reveal Event on February 20

Sony Teases Possible Playstation 4 Reveal Event on February 20Sony is anxious for the world to “see the future” of the Playstation brand and will be holding an online event a little less than three weeks from today to show off “something.” Is it the big Playstation 4 reveal? The Internet will explode if it isn’t.

Social media as its known today was in its infancy back when the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were first unveiled. Microsoft used their E3 press conference to unveil Xbox 360, then threw a big concert immediately afterward and handed out E3-branded face plates to celebrate the occasion.

Sony also revealed their new console at E3 and showed it off in a press-only area of the convention show floor, sitting on a pedestal behind glass like a valuable piece of art. I’ll never forget how silly the “boomerang” controller prototype looked.

How times have changed.

In today’s socially connected online world, companies no longer have to rely on industry events to unveil new products. They can do so themselves online and let their fans publicize it for them. That’s exactly what it appears like Sony is aiming to accomplish with their big new Playstation announcement.

On Tuesday, February 20th, Sony will give us a sneak peek at the “future” of the Playstation brand at Playstation.com. They are encouraging viewers to use the hashtag #Playstation2013 to talk about the announcement. In other words, they are looking toward social media to spread the word about, hopefully, PS4 or whatever their next gaming console will be called.

Here’s the teaser:

We’ve been assuming that Sony would break the ice first and announce their new console prior to E3 2013 in June, and that Microsoft would likely wait until the event to do so. So far, so good. That is assuming Sony doesn’t announce some add-on Playstation 3 hardware or new “slim” model. That would be… unfortunate.
