Skylanders Giants is one of Nintendo Wii U launch titles that will be available to purchase on November 18, if not a few days sooner. On a recent trip to the offices of Skylanders Giants developer Toys for Bob, I had the opportunity to retrieve some additional information about the upcoming game.
In speaking with one of the Skylanders Giants Toys for Bob team members, it was confirmed that Skylanders Giants on Wii U will be a port of the other console versions. There’s nothing hidden in the game that has been developed exclusively for Wii U. The Xbox 360/Playstation 3/Wii version has been ported to Wii U and was just delivered to Toys for Bob for testing/impressions the day before my visit.
Toys for Bob has not had much of an opportunity to play the Wii U version of Skylanders Giants. What they have seen thus far pretty much confirms what is expected.
The Skylanders Giants WIi U port will take advantage of Wii U’s basic functionality by including second-screen co-operative play where one player can play on the GamePad while the other looks on the television screen. In single-layer mode, the player can opt to use the GamePad for the item and collection management screens.
Skylanders Giants for Wii U will also support the ability to walk away from the television set and play the game exclusively on the GamePad. You won’t be able to take your Portal of Power with you and the Wii U GamePad NFC reader does not work with Skylanders toys. If you do walk away, changing characters will require returning to where the console sits.
Visually, the Toys for Bob team member thought – in his person opinion – that the Skylanders Giants Wii U port had *slightly* stronger colors than the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 versions. That’s only his opinion, though, and he hasn’t spent much time with it yet.
