Robert Downey Jr. Signs with Marvel for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3

Robert Downey Jr. Signs with Marvel for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3Negotiations between Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel Studios have finally wrapped up with the man behind Tony Stark and Iron Man signing a new two-film deal that will see him star in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The news comes as Joss Whedon continues to massage The Avengers 2 screenplay and has been publicly outspoken about the film not happening unless Downey Jr., whose previous deal with Marvel concluded with Iron Man 3, was on board. Now he is, and he would be the first to say, “I am Iron Man.”

Production on The Avengers 2 will begin in March 2014 with the film already slated for a May 1, 2015 release date. The Avengers 2 will conclude Marvel’s Cinematic Universe Phase 2, which will transition into Phase 3 later that same year with Ant-Man. The Avengers 3 does not have a locked down release date but is widely expected to debut in summer 2018.

The last two Marvel films starring Downey Jr., Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, each grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and each hold a position in the top five highest grossing movies of all time. Iron Man 3 will make its Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD debut in a little over two months from now.
