Marvel Wants Vin Diesel to Voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel Wants Vin Diesel to Voice Groot in Guardians of the GalaxyVin Diesel let slip yesterday via a new Facebook cover image that Marvel Studios wants him to voice the character of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

This story began a month ago when Diesel took to Facebook, where the international star has been known to share confidential information prior to movie studios wanting said information going public, and said he would be meeting with Marvel. After the meeting happened and he backed it up with an image of himself standing in front of an Avengers comic at Marvel Studios, Diesel stated that big news was coming at the end of July regarding his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

San Diego Comic-Con came and went in mid-July without Diesel making a Marvel appearance. The end of July came and went without Diesel saying a word about anything Marvel related. This past weekend the Disney D23 live-action movie panel featured Kevin Feige, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, but absolutely nothing pertaining to Diesel. Vin’s Marvel connection had fallen by the wayside.

Yesterday afternoon that all changed when Diesel updated his Facebook cover photo with a comic book image of Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy for all 45+ million of his followers to see. A couple hours passed before the image was removed entirely, most likely at the request of an agitated Marvel Studios.

The Vin Diesel as Groot drama came to a head last night when Deadline reported that their sources confirm Diesel is currently in negotiations to voice the walking tree character for director James Gunn. Groot and the other CGI-created Guardian, Rocket Raccoon, do not have officially confirmed voice actors as of yet. It would appear that Diesel has Groot by the root and isn’t letting go.

I, and many others, thought Diesel’s big announcement would be he’s going to portray Thanos in both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers: Age of Ultron. That’s a far meatier role than providing the voice for a tree who likes to repeat “I Am Groot” on a loop.
