Exclusive: Proof that Back to the Future is Coming to Blu-ray

You probably already assume this by now so consider this your definitive proof. The Back to the Future trilogy is coming to Blu-ray Disc later this year. It’s a done deal.

Let me preface the following by issuing a caveat to all the details I’m about to share. The origin of this scoop trace to the Canadian high country so what may appear on store shelves in the United States might differ. I’m guessing the releases will be identical, but I didn’t want to set any false expectations without clarifying first.

So in Canada, the Back to the Future Trilogy from producer Steven Spielberg and director Robert Zemeckis on Blu-ray (and a new DVD set) will be available as a three-picture box set and as singles. I can’t share their release date but the singles are planned to be day and date with the trilogy set.

As you can imagine, Back to the Future is a big deal for Universal so all three films have been digitally restored. Each film on Blu-ray will include the DVD in the same package (and possibly digital copy, though that is TBD) as well as “hours of all-new interactive bonus features.” Universal’s staple 1080p video resolution and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio should be expected.

What you see above is an early look at the singles cover art that will likely change between now and release to reflect the Blu-ray + DVD combo pack. I assure you, there is nothing fake or Jaws 19 in 3D about this.

So barring any unforeseen marketing plan changes, the Back to the Future trilogy will be on Blu-ray by year’s end. Cue Huey Lewis and the News music and commence rejoicing with this final image of the trilogy set’s short synopsis.
