Weelend Box Office Predictions Game: Newcomers Try to Cure Contagion

September 15, 2011

A remake in Straw Dogs, thriller that looks like a remake but isn't in Drive, a 3D re-release in The Lion King 3D, and the return of Sarah Jessica Parker in I Don't Know How She Does It are all hoping to cure the hold Contagion held on the box office last weekend and come out on top.

I'm sure you have your own opinion on whether Contagion or one of the newcomers will win, which is where our game comes into play. Your task is to use our new tool below and predict what each of these five films will make at the box office this weekend from September 16-18. Once your predictions are submitted, we will average them in with the other players to go up against our Prophet predictions.

Should the players come closer to the finally box office results for three or more of the films, the top individual player will take home Everything Must Go on Blu-ray. I'll keep this prize available in each new round going forward until The Prophet is beaten. I may even add to the pot.

To prove the power of numbers, in the last round The Prophet lost 2-3 against the players despite being the top overall finisher. Second-place finisher vendetta3 took home the prize.

Player prediction average scores will automatically update below as new predictions are entered. This round's entry period closes at 9pm PST on Thursday, September 15, around 12 hours from now. Good luck to you all, and the newbies trying to knock off Contagion.

There are currently 35 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for September 16-18 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Drive (2011)
FilmDistrict's Drive is enjoying a fantastic 94% rating at Rotten Tomatoes right now. The big test will be whether Ryan Gosling is enough to draw in the crowds. He's definitely become more recognizable, but I wouldn't classify him as a big time star just yet. Opens on 2,400 screens.
All: $15.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.5   Actual: $11.3
I Don't Know How She Does It
Sarah Jessica Parker returns to the silver screen in a new romantic comedy. Considering her last two films Sex and the City 2 and Did You Hear About the Morgans? were both considered bombs, I wouldn't expect big returns from this one. Opens on 2,800 screens.
All: $10.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $6.8   Actual: $4.4
The Lion King 3D
The Lion King returns, in 3D! The problem is 3D has been in a bit of a tailspin of late at the box office. This is The Lion King, after all, and Disney has been promoting the heck out of the two-week theatrical engagement ahead of the Blu-ray 3D release. Opens on 2,200 screens.
All: $16.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.1   Actual: $30.2
Straw Dogs (2011)
The second new remake this week, Straw Dogs isn't an instantly recognizable film where modern moviegoers will remember the original. The same original is now available on Blu-ray, but it's not exactly a bestseller. I consider this remake a niche release. The R-rating won't help matters much, either. Straw Dogs opens on 2,400 screens.
All: $11.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.2   Actual: $5.1
Contagion
Contagion easily topped the box office last weekend with a haul of $22.4 million. There's a slight chance, if it can hold around a 50% drop, that a second weekend win will be in the cards. This assumes the newcomer competition fails to top $10 million.
All: $13.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $13.1   Actual: $14.5
