Weekend Box Office Prophet Game: Tyler Perry or Kate Beckinsale
September 09, 2009
Can Tyler Perry score another unexpected hit or will Kate Beckinsale pull the bigger draw in the horror thriller Whiteout?
The third week of our Weekend Box Office Prophet game sees four new films try to supplant the incumbent leader from the past two weeks, The Final Destination.
Shane Acker's 9 will have a two-day head start over Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself, the girl power horror thriller Sorority Row and aforementioned Whiteout. Horror has fared relatively well the past few weeks but this week's two new entries lack the brand awareness Halloween and Final Destination carried with them.
Once your predictions are entered you are encouraged to return to this page often between now and Friday evening to follow your best guesses versus those of the Prophet (me) and the cumulative average of the other players that update in real time. | There are currently 50 players up against the Prophet The entry period for September 11 - 13 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
9Shane Acker's CGI animated 9 gets a Wednesday head start which will take a little away from its weekend numbers. 9 will have to overcome playing on just over 1,600 screens and mixed early reviews calling it everything from "dreary" to "beautiful." All: $14.9 Me: n/a Prophet: $4.6 Actual: $10.7
Sorority RowI Know What You Did Last Summer with sorority girls. 2,500 screens and Halloween creeping near could offer a little boost for a film with virtually no expectations or big names. All: $11.4 Me: n/a Prophet: $11.1 Actual: $5.1
I Can Do Bad All by MyselfTyler Perry's last film, Madea Goes to Jail, cleared $41 million its April opening weekend on 2,200 screens earlier this year. This one is opening on over 2,100 screens but lacks the pull of actor Derek Luke that Madea enjoyed. All: $16.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $20.6 Actual: $23.4
WhiteoutWhiteout marks Kate Beckinsale's first return to a horror thriller since 2007's Vacancy. It will premiere on over 2,700 screens, the most of any film this weekend. For reference, Vacancy opened on over 2,500 screens to $7.6 million while Underworld Evolution with Kate scored $26.9 million in 2006. All: $13.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $24.7 Actual: $4.9
The Final DestinationThe only film to appear in our first three games is also enjoying its third weekend of release and is the only non-newcomer this round. Its first weekend was $27.4 million and this past weekend an estimated $12.3. Hint: your prediction should not be higher than $10 million. All: $8.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $5.1 Actual: $5.5 |
