This weekend should be a wild ride at the box office with Whip It and Zombieland coming in with high expectations as well as the Toy Story and Toy Story 2 3D double-feature and Ricky Gervais in The Invention of Lying looking for a spot in the top 5. As we learned last weekend, Meatballs is a tough meal to slow down.
The Weekend Box Office Prophet game allows you to predict how each of these films will fare in the Friday-Sunday box office. Results are tabulated after the final box office numbers are released next Monday with a new game launching the following morning. Cumulative and weekly results, as well as links to past games, are always available on the main Weekend Box Office Prophet game page.
Prizes will be awarded randomly to successful players with a guarantee of one prize being awarded based on the results of this week's round. Good luck! There are currently 46 players up against the Prophet The entry period for October 2 - 4 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page. ![]() The Invention of Lying Ricky Gervais' last leading man fantastical comedy, Ghost Town, opened with $5 million on 1,500 screens with a flurry of positive reviews. Lying opens on 1,700 screens with a supporting cast including Jennifer Garner and Rob Lowe. All: $9.4 Me: n/a Prophet: $7.1 Actual: $7.0 ![]() Toy Story and Toy Story 2 3D Toy Story films are gold. So is 3D of late. Two for the price of one a steal. Put it all together and you have a box office explosion, right? Maybe. 1,600 screens, most kids already owning these films on DVD and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs still having legs could slow Woody and Buzz down. Then again, never underestimate Pixar films. All: $13.6 Me: n/a Prophet: $9.8 Actual: $12.5 ![]() Whip It Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is riding a packed roller derby worth of positive buzz coming off the Toronto Film Festival. Some are calling it Ellen Page's best role since Juno. For the record, Juno opened wide to $10.6 million on 1,000 screens after a strong limited release. Whip It will roll in on 2,100 screens following a sneak preview this past weekend designed to generate more buzz. All: $11.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $11.8 Actual: $4.7 ![]() Zombieland I'm calling it now: Zombieland will be the hardest film to predict this round. The horror/comedy that looks like the Dead Rising game franchise come to life opens on over 2,900 screens. That's a lot of screens for what looks like a niche film playing off of Adventureland. Like Meatballs' cornering the kids market last weekend, Zombieland is the only film targeted towards males opening this upcoming weekend. Tough call. All: $16.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $10.6 Actual: $24.7 ![]() Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Hats off to Meatballs for dropping a mere 17.4% in its second weekend of release. The third time is no guaranteed charm with the Toy Story double-header 3D feature coming into play. If anyone can pull off an animation upset and dethrone the reigning champ, Pixar can. All: $13.5 Me: n/a Prophet: $13.2 Actual: $15.8
