Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Titans on a Date Night
April 06, 2010

After a short hiatus (re: much needed vacation), the Prophet has returned to put the Weekend Box Office Prophet Game back into service and offer all of you a chance to win a big stack of Blu-ray movies based on your movie earnings predictions.
In this upcoming round, Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey is the only newcomer and instant underdog going up against Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson in Clash of the Titans, last weekend's champ. Also appearing in this round are holdovers Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?, How to Train Your Dragon and The Last Song with Miley Cyrus.
The object of the game is to guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for these five films from Friday, April 9 through Sunday, April 11. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions.
Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win the following EIGHT prizes:
- Mystic River on Blu-ray Disc
- Walk the Line on Blu-ray Disc
- Halo Legends on Blu-ray Disc
- Universal Soldier Regeneration on DVD
- The Running Man on Blu-ray Disc
- Gentlemen Broncos on Blu-ray Disc
- Amelia on Blu-ray Disc
- NEW THIS WEEK: Fantastic Mr. Fox on Blu-ray Disc
If the Prophet wins then all eight prizes will rollover into the next round and be joined by a ninth. Because we love this game, we'll still award a small prize to the top place finisher (view the overall leaderboard).
Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close the evening of Thursday, April 8, with this round's results being published in the next round's game page on Tuesday.
| There are currently 52 players up against the Prophet The entry period for April 9 - 11 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
Date NightSteve Carell and Tina Fey are the modern comedy match made in heaven. Early reviews are mostly positive for their first on-screen coupling and it is the only new wide-release film this upcoming weekend. But is this the right time of year for a romantic comedy to excel? Opens on 3,300 screens. All: $28.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $28.8 Actual: $25.2
Clash of the Titans (2010)A $61.2 million opening for Clash of the Titans was helped along by increased prices for 3D ticket sales. With no new 3D films coming to market, Titans should perform well once again. That is, assuming mix word of mouth reactions don't send it to an early grave. All: $39.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $32.7 Actual: $26.6
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?Tyler Perry cannot do any wrong. His latest comedy followed in its predecessors path to a big $29.2 million opening last weekend. The problem for Perry films is the sharp decline in weekend number two. Case in point: last year's I Can Do Bad All By Myself dropped over 57% in its second weekend of release. All: $15.4 Me: n/a Prophet: $12.8 Actual: $11.0
How to Train Your DragonDreamworks' latest animated adventure held its own in its second weekend with $29 million or a roughly 33.7% drop following its strong $43.7 million debut weekend. Heading into its third weekend of release, there is still no competition in its genre and word of mouth remains strong. All: $21.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $15.6 Actual: $24.9
The Last SongThe latest Nicholas Sparks novel-turned-film starring Miley Cyrus opened to a respectable $16 million last weekend or $4 million shy of its production budget. It still finished last of the three newcomers last weekend and will have a hard time topping $10 million in its second weekend. All: $9.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $7.1 Actual: $9.8 |
