Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: This Is It for Michael Jackson

The early This Is It opening combined with no other new films seeing a wide release makes this a unique round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game. This It Is stands poised to reap big returns, but Paranormal Activity continues to pull down a huge per-screen average and does not look ready to roll over and play dead just yet.

The Weekend Box Office Prophet game lets you predict what five individual films will make in millions at the box office from Friday through Sunday. The average participant scores will be weighed against the Prophet's score and if the Prophet loses as he did the past two weekends, a prize or prizes will be issued. The entry period for this round will close the evening of Thursday, October 29. The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered.

Michael Jackson's unintentional farewell will bring out his fan base in droves when This Is It debuts on roughly 3,500 screens for a strict 2 week run. The film bows on Wednesday, October 28 which gives it a 2 day head start over when our game kicks in on Friday. Fun trivia: it is estimated that over 9 million of Jackson's albums sold the month after this death.

Paranormal Activity scared away the competition last weekend on its march towards $100 million gross in domestic ticket sales with an additional $21.1 million. The biggest question this upcoming weekend is how much an effect Michael Jackson will have on the little horror film that keeps picking up momentum.

Saw VI failed to cut its teeth last weekend when Paranormal Activity battered it down to a $14.1 million opening, half the tickets of any previous Saw sequel. Despite more positive reviews than Saw V, the sixth entry can only head down from this point forward.

Law Abiding Citizen
Law Abiding Citizen continues to buck the odds and since I left it out last weekend after a stellar opening, it's back for this third weekend to tread water against This Is It. The opening weekend netted $21 million and last weekend brought in $12.4 million. Another decent weekend should bring its total to $50 million.

Because This Is It will be hard to pinpoint a good prediction this round, here's Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant for a relatively easy play. Despite the vampire tag, it netted a dismal $6.3 million its opening frame despite playing on over 3,000 screens. The next vampire film might just do better.
