Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Romance vs Vampires

January 05, 2010

Our Weekend Box Office Prophet game is back after a week off to ring in 2010. Though no new films hit cinemas last weekend, a trio of genre flicks hope to carve into the big business of James Cameron's Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

Lionsgate is pinning its hopes on the R-rated vampire film Daybreakers while Universal sets its sights on the ladies with Amy Adams in Leap Year. Meanwhile Weinstein/Dimension offers up the quirky comedy Youth in Revolt with Michael Cera.

The object of the game is simple: guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for the five films shown below. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions.

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win a prize. This week that prize is the upcoming Fox release Post Grad on the winner's choice of Blu-ray or DVD. If the Prophet wins then that prize will roll into next week and be combined with another prize.

Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close the evening of Thursday, January 7.

There are currently 49 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for January 8 - 10 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Daybreakers
Vampires shift gears from their romantic ways in New Moon to blood harvesters in Lionsgate's Daybreakers, an R-rated horror thriller starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill. Early word has been extremely positive which, combined with 2,400 screens, could equate to a strong opening.
All: $19.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $17.2   Actual: $15.1
Leap Year
Amy Adams is everywhere of late with her latest on-screen escapades appearing in the new romantic comedy Leap Year. The trailer give away the entire story, which is just how fans of chick flicks love them. Leap Year will open on just over 2,400 screens and attract pretty much the opposite crowd as Daybreakers.
All: $15.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.6   Actual: $9.2
Youth in Revolt
The wild card this week is Youth in Revolt starring Michael Cera. The young actor hopes to bounce back after the atrocious Year One by wooing newcomer Portia Doubleday by assuming an alternate rebellious persona. Like Daybreakers, early reviews are ranking excellent thus far. It opens on 2,000 screens.
All: $13.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $9.5   Actual: $6.9
Avatar
Avatar enters its fourth weekend having dominated the previous three in making no less than $68.5 million (last weekend's take). But this is the first non-holiday weekend for Avatar which should take a bite out of its totals. It is still widely expected to come out on top, though.
All: $41.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $36.7   Actual: $50.3
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Like Avatar, Sherlock must face its first non-holiday weekend after enjoying huge box office receipts its previous weekends. This will be its third weekend in theaters after having accumulated $36.6 million last weekend, a 41% drop from its opening frame. The Prophet thinks a repeat second-place finish is in the cards.
All: $21.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $18.3   Actual: $16.6
