Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Old Dogs Howl at New Moon
November 24, 2009
Last weekend yielded the most skewed results from any round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game to date thanks to the huge success of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Blind Side.
This week will be no easier with both of those films carrying over to be joined by Old Dogs with John Travolta, Robin Williams and Seth Green; the bloody Ninja Assassin; and Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox starring the voices of George Clooney and
Meryl Streep amongst others. In theory, this upcoming weekend should be another big success for Hollywood.
The Weekend Box Office Prophet game invites anyone to predict what five films will make in theaters for the upcoming weekend. After logging into the site, you will predict the weekend box office gross for Old Dogs and the other films and try to be the closest of everyone playing. If you are, then you hope the cumulative score of all the players is better on 3 or more movies than the Prophet. If so, a recently released DVD or Blu-ray Disc prize will be awarded. Weekly and cumulative scoring charts are available on the main game page.
Because of Thanksgiving we have had to make some changes to how this round of the game will be handled.
- Eligible Dates: Although all three new wide releases this week open on Wednesday, the game will count box office receipts from Friday through Sunday only.
- Closing Date: The game entry period will close Wednesday evening, November 25, a day earlier than usual in observance of the holiday.
The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. Good luck to all.
| There are currently 40 players up against the Prophet The entry period for November 27 - 29 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
Ninja AssassinWarner's R-rated foray into the world of ninjas might as well be a video game adaptation with blades chopping off limbs right and left. 2,500 screens isn't too shabby and it might attract everyone who continues to complain about New Moon's success. Talk about polar opposites. All: $20.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $11.4 Actual: $13.1
Old DogsJohn Travolta continues his run of family friendly films after Wild Hogs to which Old Dogs sounds like a sequel. It isn't, but it might be important to note Wild Hogs opened to $39.7 million in early March 2007. The Travolta family's unfortunate time in the media this year might also help spur ticket sales when it opens on 3,300 screens. All: $26.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $36.9 Actual: $16.9
Fantastic Mr. FoxWes Anderson's quirky translation of the Fantastic Mr. Fox children's novel is entering similar territory that Where The Wild Things Are did. The core audience who grew up reading the book will be enticed and critics love it. But will everyone else? It goes into wide release on 2,000+ screens. All: $19.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $14.3 Actual: $7.0
The Twilight Saga: New MoonNew Moon just had the third highest opening weekend of all time and now it enters a holiday weekend with the kids out of school. How many Twihards plan on seeing it again is the big question. As its opening weekend proved, do not underestimate the draw of anything Twilight related. All: $71.6 Me: n/a Prophet: $69.6 Actual: $42.9
The Blind SideSandra Bullock is back and scored a huge $34.1 million opening with this sports drama. The word is out that The Blind Side is good which could point towards another strong weekend coming off Thanksgiving when families are together and Old Dogs sellouts result in spillover. All: $25.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $18.3 Actual: $40.1 |
