Also arriving is the R-rated romantic comedy It's Complicated while Nine and Up in the Air with George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick see their first wide release.
The goal of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game is to predict the scores of 5 films for the upcoming Friday through Sunday period, in this case December 25 - 27. The films in play are listed below, but please keep in mind that the Chipmunks and Up in the Air will have been in wide release 2 days prior to the game's eligible period and those days will not count towards the weekend total you are predicting.
How you perform will be averaged in with everyone else and compared against the Prophet's predictions. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page. ![]() Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel The Chipmunks return with twice as many critters as the hugely successful original. How successful? Try a $44 million opening weekend the same month back in 2007. The "Squeakquel" is set to arrive on roughly 3,700 screens or about 200 more than its predecessor. Keep in mind this opens Wednesday so it will have 2 days in the book before the weekend game eligible days. All: $34.5 Me: n/a Prophet: $24.5 Actual: $48.9 ![]() It's Complicated The R-rated comedy starring heavyweights Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin is after the older crowd much of this Christmas' offerings seem to be shunning. Reviews have been perfectly mixed thus far with a split 50% rating at Rotten Tomatoes. It opens on 2,800 screens. All: $15.9 Me: n/a Prophet: $6.3 Actual: $22.1 ![]() Sherlock Holmes (2009) Warner is hoping the allure of Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., will help boost the numbers for Guy Ritchie's almost comical reimagining of Scotland Yard's finest detective and his sidekick Watson. Over 3,600 screens and reviews skewing more towards favorable than not should help Holmes uncover a sizable opening. All: $38.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $12.8 Actual: $62.4 ![]() Up in the Air Jason Reitman's Up in the Air has been circling a limited release for several weeks but will finally see a true wide expansion on Wednesday, Dec. 23. It's a solid film that is now backed by 6 Golden Globe nominations at the forefront of marketing. The expansion will touch down in 1,895 screens. All: $13.4 Me: n/a Prophet: $7.0 Actual: $11.3 ![]() Avatar Avatar enjoyed a strong $77 million opening last weekend despite a nasty winter storm that dumped up to 2 feet of snow in the northeast. A tiny drop between its Saturday and Sunday numbers suggests strong word of mouth should secure a second box office win in a row. It will have to beat the Chipmunks and Sherlock first, though. All: $54.4 Me: n/a Prophet: $44.5 Actual: $75.6
