Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Fairies and Angels
January 20, 2010

Our last round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game saw a record number 56 players beat the Prophet by a score of 3 to 2 (
view the results). When the Prophet falls a winner is chosen, and that winner is
Spideybat who came out on top by missing all five films by a combined total of $9 million. He will take home
Whiteout and
Post Grad on Blu-ray for his win.
In this next round, James Cameron's Avatar and The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington will be joined by newcomers Legion, Extraordinary Measures with Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as The Tooth Fairy.
The object of this game is to guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for these five films from Friday, January 22 through Sunday, January 24. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions (view main game page and leaderboards).
Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win a prize: Drew Barrymore's Whip It on Blu-ray or DVD. If the Prophet wins then that prize will rollover into the next round and be joined by another prize.
Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close the evening of Thursday, January 21, with this round's results being published in the next round's game page on Tuesday.
| There are currently 47 players up against the Prophet The entry period for January 22 - 24 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
Extraordinary MeasuresThe unlikely pairing of old school archaeological hero, Harrison Ford, and his younger, goofier protege, Brendan Fraser, hope to drive this drama at the box office for CBS Films. It will open on 2,450 screens, and never underestimate the pull of Mr. Ford. All: $14.6 Me: n/a Prophet: $11.3 Actual: $6.0
LegionSony's Legion is set to swoop into theaters on 2,400 screens behind its heavily armed angelic imagery and R-rating. The Book of Eli proved last weekend that an R won't necessarily stint ticket sales. But that film had Denzel. This one has a cannibalistic grandma and skews more towards horror. All: $17.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $14.9 Actual: $17.5
The Tooth Fairy (2010)The Rock jumps into another tough guy for the kids to laugh at in this new fantasy comedy. His last similar role without the benefit of a big Disney franchise name behind it was The Game Plan which opened to $23 million on 3,100 screens. This tooth adventure opens on approximately 3,000 screens. All: $18.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $21.0 Actual: $14.0
The Book of EliThe Book of Eli enjoyed a huge opening to the tune of $32.8 million despite the continued domination by Avatar. Three newcomers could eat heavily into its second weekend, especially if Legion picks up good word of mouth after Friday. Regardless, Eli should still place in the top 5. All: $18.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $16.0 Actual: $15.7
AvatarWill Avatar slow down now that it has crossed $500 million domestically? Maybe a little coming off the three-day weekend, but there is still a strong possibility James Cameron will be king of the weekend box office once again by the time Sunday comes to a close. Especially after clearing nearly $43 million last weekend. All: $32.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $32.7 Actual: $34.9 |
