Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Eli on the Move
January 12, 2010
For the second weekend in a row, three new films will burst onto the scene in hopes of cutting into the Christmas holdovers James Cameron's Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.
Warner Bros. has put their stock into Denzel Washington and The Book of Eli. Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones will finally see a wide release while Jackie Chan lowers his target audience's age with The Spy Next Door.
The object of this game is to guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for five films. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions (view main game page and leaderboards).
Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win a prize. This week that prize is Whiteout on DVD or Blu-ray. Because the Prophet won last week, the prize of Post Grad on Blu-ray or DVD rolls forward into this week.
Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close the evening of Thursday, January 14 with a recap and final box office numbers on Monday evening.
| There are currently 56 players up against the Prophet The entry period for January 15 - 17 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
The Book of EliDenzel Washington does his best Mad Max impersonation in this post-apocalyptic thriller. 3,000+ screens makes it the biggest new opener and you'd be hard pressed to watch something on TV and not see an ad. Working against Eli is the 17% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes thus far. All: $25.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $16.0 Actual: $32.8
The Spy Next DoorIf Denzel looks a lot like Mel in Eli, then Jackie Chan is channeling The Rock in Lionsgate's answer to Disney's family-friendly kids superhero movies. George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus round out the multicultural cast that will open on 2,800 screens in hopes of drawing all the kiddies. All: $14.4 Me: n/a Prophet: $9.6 Actual: $9.7
The Lovely BonesPeter Jackson's adaptation of The Lovely Bones novel has been the victim of release date shuffling for the past couple months. Whether due to mixed reviews or otherwise, its wide release was pushed from the more lucrative Christmas time frame back to now when it will expand to 2,400 screens. All: $13.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $9.1 Actual: $17.0
AvatarAvatar again? If the James Cameron spectacle keeps performing strongly then you might be predicting its weekend box office totals for another month. Last weekend it soared to $50.3 million, only a 27% drop from the previous. Moviegoers love their Na'vi and 3D which should translate to a fifth consecutive first place finish. All: $36.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $36.1 Actual: $42.8
DaybreakersIt was between this and Sherlock for the final spot so I went with the newer film. Daybreakers opened to a relatively strong $15.1 million and carries good word of mouth within its horror genre. The downside is Book of Eli represents direct competition that could cut a big hole in Daybreakers second weekend. All: $9.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $8.0 Actual: $5.2 |
