Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Cop Out to Crazies

Joining holdovers James Cameron's Avatar, Valentine's Day and Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio in the game this week is the 80s homage to buddy cop movies Cop Out starring Tracy Morgan, Bruce Willis and Sean William Scott, and the remake of George A. Romero's 1973 The Crazies that stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell and Danielle Panabaker.

The object of this game is to guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for these five films from Friday, February 26 through Sunday, February 28. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions (view the leaderboard).

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win five prizes or the equivalent of a new Blu-ray Disc collection:

• Halo Legends on Blu-ray Disc
• Universal Soldier Regeneration on DVD
• NEW THIS WEEK: The Running Man on Blu-ray Disc

If the Prophet wins then all five prizes will rollover into the next round and be joined by a sixth. Should 100 or more players participate and the Prophet wins, the top finisher will receive this week's new prize while the other prizes will roll into next week. Al the more incentive to help us drum up additional players.

The Crazies (2010) The remake of the George A. Romero classic has some creepy trailers and should fill a recent void in horror films nicely. While not a high profile release like The Wolf Man, many feel The Crazies will be the superior film and could surprise with a strong bow. It opens on 2,400 screens. All: $19.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.2   Actual: $16.1 Cop Out (Glock Out Edition) Most of the buzz this upcoming weekend surrounds Kevin Smith's Cop Out but for all the wrong reasons. Critics are already tearing it apart with a Rotten Tomatoes score under 20% while reaction to green and red band trailers has been mixed. Like The Crazies, it quenches a genre (comedy) drought when it opens on over 3,100 screens. All: $20.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $26.8   Actual: $18.2 Avatar Avatar's resilience remains impossible to ignore and thus it returns for another round. On Monday it came in second only to Shutter Island and finished last weekend with $16.2 million or 31% less than the weekend before. Could this be Avatar's last turn in our game? Most likely so. All: $12.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.2   Actual: $13.7 Shutter Island Shutter Island soared last weekend to the tune of over $41 million and held up the strongest of all films on Monday. Being the only new release was clearly a benefit, and the arrival of two new films will knock it back some in its second frame. It should still finish above all of last weekend's films. It came in second last weekend with $16.7 million and might not drop as much as the other make-skewed films by the benefit of both new films being targeted squarely at guys.
