Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: All Eyes on Avatar
December 15, 2009
How much will Avatar make its opening weekend?
That's the possible hundred million dollar question Fox and visionary director James Cameron are keenly focused on as the most expensive movie ever made makes its way to theaters this Friday. Early reviews are good and having seen the film already I can back them up. Avatar is a spectacle not to be missed on the big screen.
You can try to predict what Avatar will make this upcoming weekend along with Did You Hear About the Morgans? and three holdovers from last weekend in our Weekend Box Office Predictions game. How you perform will be averaged in with everyone else and compared against the Prophet's predictions. If the players beat the Prophet on three or more of the films then a prize is awarded to the top player. If not, the prize rolls into next week.
The Prophet has won the past two rounds so (500) Days of Summer and All About Steve on Blu-ray or DVD will be combined with Jennifer's Body on Blu-ray or DVD. Three movies up for grabs... predict wisely!
Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close the evening of Thursday, December 17.
| There are currently 58 players up against the Prophet The entry period for December 18 - 20 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
AvatarThe most expensive movie ever made will explode into theaters on over 3,300 screens. Not quite a summer screen count, but keep in mind roughly 3,000 of those are 3D showings with the extra ticket surcharge. Avatar is tracking 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and could be headed for a record-breaking December bow. All: $91.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $86.2 Actual: $77.0
Did You Hear About the Morgans? The romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker will unspool on 2,700 screens and hope to be the top alternative to Avatar for women. Hugh has been out of movies for over two years with his last, the rom-com Music and Lyrics, opening to just under $14 million on 3,000 screens. All: $13.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $14.9 Actual: $6.6
The Princess and the FrogDisney's return to hand-drawn animation was a moderation success with a $24.2 million opening last week. It is still the go-to option for kids and families and could see some Avatar spillover traffic from sellouts. The downside is nighttime showings might not be as full with the kids in bed. All: $16.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $13.5 Actual: $12.2
InvictusInvictus opening soft last weekend with $8.6 million, not much consider it has Clint Eastwood in the director's chair with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon on the marquee. Some blame could be put on the South African subject matter, though reviews have been generally mixed in comparison to previous Eastwood efforts. All: $5.9 Me: n/a Prophet: $4.2 Actual: $4.2
The Blind SideThe Blind Side keeps motoring along and as a result remains to see another round of our game. Last weekend, its fourth, brought in another $15.1 million to bring the domestic gross total to $149.8 million. For reference, the drop last weekend compared to the previous weekend was only 24.9%. All: $10.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $9.6 Actual: $10.0 |
