Weekend Box Office Predictons Game: I Am Alien, Big Momma or Liam Neeson?

February 16, 2011

Just Go With It leveraged the winning combination of Valentine's Day, Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston and a bikini-clad Brooklyn Decker to beat Justin Bieber: Never Say Never in 3D at the box office last weekend. Both of those holdovers now face stiff competition from I Am Number Four with Alex Pettyfer and Glee's Diana Argon, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and an angry Liam Neeson in Unknown to finish in the top three at the box office this upcoming weekend.

In this new round of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you can enter your predictions for how much money you think these five films will make between Friday, February 18 and Sunday, February 20. Your predictions are averaged with all the other players to go up against The Prophet's predictions.

Should The Prophet be closer on 3 or more of the films then the prizes consisting of The Tournament and new this round Case 39 on Blu-ray will roll into next week and be joined by a third while the top player finisher will score a consolation prize. If the players win 3 or more films then the top player wins both Blu-ray prizes.

In the last round The Prophet narrowly took 3 of 5 yet managed to finish second overall. Top finisher Leon takes home a consolation DVD.

The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. This round's entry period will close at 8pm PST Thursday, February 17.

There are currently 46 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for February 18 - 20 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

I Am Number Four
High school and aliens collide in the theatrical adaptation of a popular young adult book series. It will try to ride heart-throb Alex Pettyfer and Glee star Diana Agron to box office bliss by appealing to the core tweens and teens demo that Twilight does so well in. The same appeal could keep guys away who might otherwise find the sci-fi angle intriguing.
All: $25.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $19.7   Actual: $19.4
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
This fat "lady" continues to sing but the Big Momma movies don't seem content to end. Just because it looks like garbage doesn't mean it won't attract business. The previous two films opened above $25 million and this one will open on close to 3,000 screens. Don't underestimate the appeal of Martin Lawrence as Big Momma.
All: $20.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $22.1   Actual: $16.3
Unknown
I can't help but think of Taken when looking at any ad featuring Liam Neeson in Unknown. It has that same "old guy will kick some ass" vibe that helped Taken open to almost $25 million in January 2009. Can Unknown reach those heights in drawing an older crowd versus the young-skewed I Am Number Four? It opens on over 3,000 screens.
All: $21.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $22.4   Actual: $21.9
Just Go With It
Just Go With It had its Valentine's Day weekend bump and enjoyed a healthy $6 million plus on Monday night alone. Don't expect anywhere near the $30 million it made last weekend this upcoming weekend. A sizable 50% or more drop is not entirely out of the realm of possibility with three newcomers entering the picture.
All: $15.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.8   Actual: $18.5
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never
Justin Bieber opened strong but this is the type of film that is front-heavy and will drop like a rock moving forward. For example, the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus concert movie opened at over $31 million and then tanked to $10 in its second frame. It also only made 65% of what Gnomeo & Juliet made on Monday, a film it beat over the weekend.
All: $12.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $11.7   Actual: $13.3
