Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Wimpy Kid Swings a Sucker Punch

March 24, 2011

Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. are hoping Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone and Abbie Cornish bring enough girl power in Sucker Punch to topple the return of the wimpy kid in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. Jostling for leftovers will be Rango, Battle: Los Angeles and last weekend's champ, Limitless with Bradley Cooper.

Our weekly Weekend Box Office Prophet Game empowers you with the ability to predict how much money each of these five films will make this weekend from Friday, March 25 through Sunday, March 27. Your prediction will be averaged in with your fellow players to match up against The Prophet. If the Prophet outplays the players, like he did in the last round, then the prize pot including Jackass 3 on Blu-ray and new this round The Fighter on Blu-ray will roll into next week and be joined by a third prize. If the players win 3 of the 5 films then the top player finisher from the round will take home all the prizes.

The average player scores will update in real time below as new player predictions are added. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, March 24. Will you be the sucker or beat The Prophet to the punch?

There are currently 40 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for March 25 - 27 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules
The sequel to Diary of a Wimpy Kid arrives in theaters nearly a year to the day after its predecessor. It opens on nearly an identical screen count around 3,100. Can Rodrick Rules match the impressive $22.1 million opening of the original? Not likely, but it should get close.
All: $18.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $19.3   Actual: $23.8
Sucker Punch
Zack Snyder returns from his detour into animation with Sucker Punch in hopes of recapturing his 300 success. That film opened 2 years ago during this same month on around 3,100 screens. It grossed a huge $70.9 million during its first 3 days. Sucker Punch opens on around 3,000 screens but lacks the hype. Don't expect a repeat performance.
All: $26.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $15.6   Actual: $19.1
Limitless
Bradley Cooper became a legitimate leading man with Limitless in breaking estimates with $18.9 million last weekend. Its drop should be south of 50 percent given neither Wimpy Kid or Sucker Punch play to the same demographic. Limitless is the must-see adult demo film right now.
All: $12.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.5   Actual: $15.1
Rango
Rango rides into its fourth weekend coming off a strong second-place finish last weekend with $15.1 million. Impressively its drop has shrunk each successive weekend; from 40.6% to 33.3%. A little math should give you a strong indication of where Rango should wind up this upcoming weekend.
All: $10.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $9.8   Actual: $9.8
Battle: Los Angeles
Unlike Rango, Battle: Los Angeles suffered a painful 59.1% drop its second weekend in theaters with $14.5 million. With Sucker Punch aiming for the same young adult male audience, Battle:LA could be dealt another big blow even as it marches past the $100 million mark.
All: $8.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $6.8   Actual: $7.6
