Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Tron Legacy and All Newcomers
December 15, 2010

Given last weekend's subpar performance from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Tourist, I've decided that this round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet Game will feature - for the first time since the game's inception - a new film in every slot. With no carryovers this will be one of the hardest rounds you'll have the opportunity to play in.
The object of the game is to predict the North American box office totals from Friday, December 17 through Sunday, December 19 for Black Swan with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, Tron Legacy with Garrett Hedlund and Jeff Bridges, How Do You Know with Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon, Yogi Bear, and The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. Your prediction will be averaged in with all the players and compared against the Prophet's prediction for each film. If the players win 3 or more of the films then the top player will win Mad Max on Blu-ray, Shaun of the Dead on DVD and new this week, Battlestar Galactica: Razor on Blu-ray. If the Prophet wins 3 or more of the films then the top player takes home a consolation DVD prize like Shanen did in the last round and the prize pot will roll into next week and be added to.
The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 8pm PST Thursday, December 16.
| There are currently 50 players up against the Prophet The entry period for December 17-19 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
How Do You KnowRomantic comedies return to the box office with the unusual grouping of Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson. This James L. Brooks comedy is the first from the writer/director since Spanglish in 2004 and that dud starring Adam Sandler brought in under $10 million its first weekend off 2,400 screens. This one opens on 2,500 screens. All: $12.5 Me: n/a Prophet: $6.7 Actual: $7.5
Tron Legacy 3DTron Legacy is hyped on the Internet. Disney is advertising for it like mad. But is it too nerdy to speak to mass audiences? Those who grew up loving the original will rush to see it but that's a relatively small portion of the movie-going public. Legacy could open flat or go through the roof; it's a tough call. Opens on 3,300 screens. All: $40.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $43.7 Actual: $44.0
Yogi BearBattling with Tron for 3D screens is Yogi Bear, the latest classic cartoon modernized in cgi and mixed with live-action. This formula was golden for Alvin and the Chipmunks but that film had a lot more buzz building into its release than Yogi does. The bear gets the most screens this weekend with over 3,400. All: $20.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $24.4 Actual: $16.4
The FighterThe first of two films expanding this weekend, The Fighter was a big success in limited release and Paramount hopes the inspirational boxing drama based on a true story continues to knock out audiences. It will be playing on 2,200 screens this weekend. All: $15.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $10.6 Actual: $12.1
Black SwanBlack Swan expands to 900 screens this weekend and will likely sell out a good chunk of its showings as Oscar buzz builds for the ballet drama from Darren Aronofsky. Natalie Portman will surely be in the running for Best Actress, while Mila Kunis has a shot at getting nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It's momentum has only just begun to build. All: $11.5 Me: n/a Prophet: $8.8 Actual: $8.4 |
