Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: The Help Faces Remakes

August 17, 2011

Remakes of Conan the Barbarian starring Jason Momoa and Fright Night with Colin Farrell join the Anne Hathaway love story One Day and the kids sequel Spy Kids: All the Time in the World with Jessica Alba in the second straight weekend featuring four new wide release films. Like last weekend, all eyes will be on a holdover which could leave all the newcomers looking up from below.

This new round of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game invites you to log into the site and predict what these four new films along with The Help will earn in North American cinemas this weekend between Friday, August 19 and Sunday, August 21. We'll automatically take your prediction and average it in with the other players to go up against our Prophet prediction.

To make the game more interesting, we'll award the top individual player performer Shaun of the Dead on DVD if all the players scores averaged together can beat the Prophet on 3 or more of the films. If the Prophet wins then the prize will roll into the next round. Check out the main game page with past results.

Player prediction average scores will update below as new predictions are entered. This round's entry period closes at 9pm PST on Thursday, August 18. Get those predictions in.

There are currently 34 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for August 19 - 21 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Conan the Barbarian (2011)
Lionsgate's Conan remake was laughed at by many until its star, Jason Momoa, became a fan favorite on HBO's Game of Thrones over the spring. That exposure will help boost Conan's bottom line, but it's unlikely the action fest will win the weekend. It opens on 2,900 screens.
All: $20.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.8   Actual: $10.0
Fright Night (2011)
The other remake this weekend will have a tougher go at attracting business due to the niche audience for the original and the horror genre which failed Final Destination last weekend. Don't expect Fright Night to stand atop Conan by weekend's end. Like that film, it opens on 2,900 screens.
All: $16.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.3   Actual: $7.7
One Day
One Day is getting some extra press due to its star, Anne Hathaway, currently being a media magnet as she shoot's next summer's The Dark Knight Rises playing the role of Catwoman. Even so, One Day is an indie romance and is opening on a meager 1,600 screens. Rethink any prediction north of $10 million.
All: $7.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $5.4   Actual: $5.1
Spy Kids: All the Time in the World
I'll save you some time and share the previous Spy Kid openings. The original opened to $26.5 million off 3,100 screens in 2001. The sequel racked up $16.7 million off 3,300 screens a year later. In 2003, the franchise went 3D and exploded with $33.4 million off 3,300 screens. That was 8 years ago. Number four opens on 3,000 screens.
All: $19.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $15.1   Actual: $11.6
The Help
The Help would have toppled Caesar last weekend had it opened on Friday and not Wednesday. Word of mouth is so strong for the film that I'm letting it take the lone holder slot ahead of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which technically won the weekend. Don't underestimate this film's appeal after it racked up a $26 million weekend after a mid-week opening.
All: $18.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $20.5   Actual: $20.0
