Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: The Green Hornet has a Dilemma

January 12, 2011

Will The Green Hornet be a bust or the first breakout hit of the year? Sony's been marketing it heavily of late but the delay from December into January is a ominous sign for this relatively low budget action film starring a comedian.

In this latest round of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you'll get to predict what The Green Hornet will make its opening weekend from January 14 through January 16. You'll also predict the opening weekend box office business for the other newcomer, The Dilemma with Kevin James and Vince Vaughn, as well as holdovers True Grit, Little Fockers, and Season of the Witch.

The goal of the game is of course to beat everyone else, as well as for all the player predictions averaged together to beat the Prophet for 3 out of the 5 movies. In the last round, the Prophet won 3-2 by predicting low despite the player average nailing True Grit's tally exactly.

All three prizes from the last round are still up for grabs this round because the Prophet won. They include Mad Max on Blu-ray, Shaun of the Dead on DVD, and Battlestar Galactica: Razor on Blu-ray. The top player finisher avonbarksdale (missed all 5 films by a mere combined $1.6 million) wins a consolation DVD.

The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. This round's entry period will close at 8pm PST Thursday, January 13. Good luck, hornets.

There are currently 48 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for January 14 - 16 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

The Dilemma
Vince Vaughn and Kevin James are out for laughs in the first heavily promoted comedy of the year. Realistically The Dilemma doesn't look funny at all and likely slipped into December due to Universal having little faith in it. It opens on 2,900 screens.
All: $18.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $21.3   Actual: $17.8
The Green Hornet
Sony's pushing of The Green Hornet in 3D out of the holiday season kept it from going up against stronger new competition. The downside is the Seth Rogen starrer arrives in theaters when people aren't focusing on going out to the movies. There's a lot of Hornet chatter around the web but that won't necessarily translate into ticket sales. Opens on 3,500 screens.
All: $28.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $27.6   Actual: $33.5
True Grit (2010)
True Grit enters its fourth weekend after having beat out a pair of newcomers to win last weekend with $14.6 million in ticket sales. Word of mouth has been a powerful ally for the Coen Brothers' most successful film to date. It stands a favorable chance of finishing in the top 3.
All: $10.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $8.2   Actual: $11.0
Little Fockers
Little Fockers continues its march to $150 million after snaring $13.5 million and second place last weekend. The Dilemma and Green Hornet should affect its box office more than True Grit's by eating into the family demographic. Don't expect a double-digit in millions take.
All: $8.3   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.0   Actual: $7.2
Season of the Witch
Season of the Witch is the ugly duckling of this round after making a mere $10.6 million its opening weekend. The drop off in weekend number two could be substantial with virtually no word of mouth and a horrific Rotten Tomatoes score. The next viable season for this witch is the home video window.
All: $5.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $6.5   Actual: $4.6
