Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Season of the Witch Duels with Country Music

January 05, 2011

It's the Happy New Year edition of our Weekend Box Office Propet game after taking a short break from predicting movie earnings over the holidays. For this new round, Nicholas Cage and Ron Perlman experience the Season of the Witch and Gwyneth Paltrow is Country Strong while holdovers Tron: Legacy, True Grit and Little Fockers enter what should be another closely contested battle for the top spot.

Where you come in is this game allows you to predict what these five movies will make at this weekend's box office from Friday, January 7 through Sunday, January 9. Your predictions will be averaged in with everyone else to go up against the Prophet. If the players beat the Prophet on 3 or more of the films then the top player will receive Mad Max on Blu-ray, Shaun of the Dead on DVD, Battlestar Galactica: Razor on Blu-ray. If the Prophet wins then the top player finisher gets a consolation DVD and the prize pot rolls into next week.

The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are made. This round's entry period will close at 8pm PST Thursday, January 6. Good luck, witches.

There are currently 51 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for January 7 - 9 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Season of the Witch
Didn't we just see Nicholas Cage playing a period character rooted in action? That's didn't work out so well for Disney and The Sorcerer's Apprentice whose $17.6 million first weekend last summer from 3,500 screens was considered a let down after a Wednesday debut. Season of the Witch, which looks cooler but far more niche, opens on 1,000 fewer screens.
All: $12.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $11.8   Actual: $10.6
Country Strong
Country Strong continues its expansion this weekend and will open on somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 screens. If Witch fumbles then Country Strong behind Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw could potentially contest it for the top spot despite playing on 1,000 fewer screens. The possibility is very much alive.
All: $12.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $8.7   Actual: $7.3
Tron Legacy 3D
With the holidays behind us, the nearly $20 million Tron: Legacy has speared the last two weekends will likely take a tumble this upcoming weekend. Working in Tron's favor is no "big" new opener to threaten it and the potential for those who missed it because of holiday madness now finding time to consider making the trip.
All: $12.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $11.6   Actual: $10.1
True Grit (2010)
True Grit has been fighting tooth and nail with Tron: Legacy since it was released just before Christmas. On Monday it beat out Clu and friends by around 200k. Expect another closely contested battle between the wild west and computer world this upcoming weekend.
All: $14.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $11.9   Actual: $14.6
Little Fockers
Creating a threesome this upcoming weekend is Little Fockers. It finished between Tron: Legacy and True Grit on Monday and will likely perform better on the weekend with family matinee viewings. Little Fockers could land anywhere between first and fifth in what should be a tight race.
All: $13.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.4   Actual: $13.5
