Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Scream 4 Visits Rio

April 14, 2011

A sluggish North American box office should get a boost this weekend with the release of Fox's "don't call me Angry Birds" animated flick Rio, and the return of Ghost Face in the "you're supposed to call me Scre4m" sequel Scream 4.

These two big openers will take a "stab" at dethroning the incumbent box office champ Hop and topping holdovers Hanna and Arthur. You can predict what each of these 5 films will make in this Weekend Box Office Prophet Game and put your best guesses into the mix with all the other players to go up against The Prophet. If The Prophet wins, like he has the past several weeks including a 3-2 win in the last round, then the prize pack of Jackass 3, The Fighter and Morning Glory on Blu-ray will roll into the next round. But if the players can beat The Prophet, then the top player finisher wins the entire prize pot.

The average player scores will update in real time below as new player predictions are added. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, April 14. View the overall player leaderboard here and get those predictions in.

There are currently 47 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for April 15 - 17 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Rio
Animation has been a lone bright spot at the box office this weekend. Case in point: Hop has won the past two weekend's despite below average reviews. Now we get Rio; a big, colorful film that looks like Angry Birds to the extreme. Review are mostly positive thus far and a big 3,800 screen count means business. Rio should easily take the top spot.
All: $37.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $38.8   Actual: $39.2
Scream 4
Scream is back with all the old players looking, well, older as they return for another dance with Ghost Face in the same place where the horror franchise began. There's a lot of interest from horror fans in Scream which should translate to a strong opening, followed by a big tail off into its second weekend. Scream 4 opens on 3,300 screens.
All: $29.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $37.6   Actual: $18.7
Hop
Hop has enjoyed two strong weeks at the box office without any competition threatening to steal away family audiences. That all changes with the arrival of Rio which all but guarantees Hop will see its first significant decline after making $21.3 million last weekend.
All: $12.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.3   Actual: $10.7
Hanna
Hanna was the big surprise last weekend in taking second place with $12.4 million ahead of the more advertised and bigger budget Arthur remake from Warner Bros. Strong word of mouth should stay on Hanna's side and result in another strong showing from the little assassin who could.
All: $8.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $8.5   Actual: $7.3
Arthur (2011)
Arthur limped into third place with $12.2 million, well below studio expectations which had the Russell Brand remake of the Dudley Moore classic coming in closer to the $20 million range. Simply put: no one cares about this movie which should result in a steep drop in its second weekend.
All: $7.3   Me: n/a   Prophet: $6.1   Actual: $6.8
