Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Salt, Ramona and Beezus

July 21, 2010

Angelina Jolie ends her two-year acting drought (not including voice work) in Salt while young starlet Selena Gomez hopes to step into her own in Ramona and Beezus, two new films aiming to dethrone Christopher Nolan's Inception at the box office this upcoming weekend.

In a shortened version of our interactive Weekend Box Office Prophet Game that will only be open for 24 hours, you get to predict what Salt, Ramona and Beezus, as well as Inception, Despicable Me and The Sorcerer's Apprentice will make at the box office from Friday, July 23 through Sunday, July 25. Once your predictions are submitted, they are averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score that competes against the Prophet predictions.

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win The Illusionist and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief on Blu-ray, the former rolling over from last week since the Prophet won. A tie rules in favor of the players.

If the Prophet comes out on top then these two prizes will roll into the next round and be joined by a third. We will still award a small DVD prize to the top place finisher in the event that happens.

Once you are successfully logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, July 22, with this round's results being published Monday evening when the actual box office numbers are released.

There are currently 71 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for July 23 - 25 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Ramona and Beezus
Family friendly films have performed extremely well at the box office this summer with Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me enjoying huge gains. This one targets the young female niche with popular young actress Selena Gomez headlining and is off to a poor start with critics. Opens on 2,700 screens.
All: $15.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.3   Actual: $7.8
Salt
Angelina Jolie returns to a headlining role in Salt, her first major film since Wanted in 2008 (which opened to $50.1 million). Approximately 3,400 screens to open won't hurt, but the 59% at Rotten Tomatoes doesn't begin to measure up to the hype Inception built up en-route to its $62 million opening.
All: $36.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $35.4   Actual: $36.0
Inception
Inception opened to $62.8 million and continued its hot start with $10.2 million on Monday and $9.8 on Tuesday. Can Inception win a second weekend in a row? It is far from out of the question if audiences don't find Salt to be a taste worth acquiring.
All: $38.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $35.8   Actual: $42.7
Despicable Me
Despicable Me only dropped 41.8% in its second weekend last weekend, down to $32.8 million from its $56.4 million opening. Another double-digit millions opening seems a lock without another big animated movie or 3D experience to lure families away.
All: $21.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $20.3   Actual: $23.7
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Have moviegoers tired of the Jerry Bruckheimer formula for success? A flat opening for Prince of Persia following by The Sorcerer's Apprentice floundering to $17.6 million its opening weekend doesn't bode well for the mega producer. Will The Sorcerer's Apprentice drop enough in its second weekend to dip below $10 million?
All: $9.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $9.4   Actual: $9.7
