Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Robin Hood Targets Iron Man

May 12, 2010

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe bursts onto the scene this weekend and will attempt the Herculean task of toppling Iron Man 2 from its lofty box office perch. Before we get into this round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, a congratulations goes out to mk342506 for winning the last round (see the round results and leaderboard) and Elektra on Blu-ray after the players tied the Prophet 2-2-1.

Joining Robin Hood and Iron Man 2 this weekend are a pair of chick flicks with zero chance of finishing in the top two: Just Wright with Queen Latifah and Common, and Letters to Juliet with Amanda Seyfried.

The game's objective is to guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for these five films from Friday, May 14 through Sunday, May 17. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions.

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win Mel Brooks' High Anxiety on Blu-ray Disc. A tie goes in favor of the players.

If the Prophet wins then this prize will rollover into the next round and be joined by another. We will still award a small prize to the top place finisher should that happen.

Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, May 13, with this round's results being published in the next round's game page next Tuesday or Wednesday.

There are currently 38 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for May 14 - 17 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Just Wright
Queen Latifah and Common hope to leech off the NBA playoffs with this romantic comedy set against a basketball backdrop. A relatively low 1,800 screen count works to the film's disadvantage but the names on the marquee could bring in a few extra ticket sales.
All: $9.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $8.7   Actual: $8.3
Letters to Juliet
The second chick flick opening this weekend stars Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) and comes from Summit Entertainment who still feels the sting from Remember Me bombing earlier this year. Early buzz has been nearly non-existent which might make it hard to fill the 2,800 screen count.
All: $13.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.9   Actual: $13.5
Robin Hood
All eyes this weekend are on Robin Hood and whether Russell Crowe and company can unseat Iron Man 2 from the top spot. Without high-tech gadgetry and the charm of Tony Stark, Ridley Scott's dark and tedious "Robin Begins" story will be a tough mass appeal sell. It opens on over 3,400 screens.
All: $45.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $27.3   Actual: $36.1
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2 opened with a mammoth $128.1 million which, while good, did not approach the $150+ million many industry insiders assumed it would. Now the hard part comes: how much will Robin Hood's arrival affect Iron Man's second weekend? Also remember that $7.5 million last weekend was off Thursday midnight screenings.
All: $65.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $54.0   Actual: $52.0
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Freddy's fade kicked it into overdrive last weekend with a 72.3 percent drop for a $9.1 million take. Expect another significant decrease moving into its third frame as most who wanted to see the reimagining of Freddy Krueger theatrically probably already have.
All: $5.3   Me: n/a   Prophet: $4.8   Actual: $4.7
