Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Real Steel Readies Knockout Blow

October 06, 2011

Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Real Steel Readies Knockout BlowReal Steel starring Hugh Jackman aims to deliver a knockout punch at the box office this first weekend in October following a month when new releases were continually beaten down by holdovers. Joining Real Steel is The Ides of March with George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, another film looking to do what no newcomer could last weekend: break the $10 million mark.

These two new films are joined by Dolphin Tale, Moneyball, and 50/50 in this new round of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game. Playing is easy: once logging into the site (registration is free and painless), return to this page and submit your predictions for what these five films will make in millions this weekend between Friday, October 7 and Sunday, October 9.

The game takes your score and automatically averages it in with the other players. That average score for each film is then pitted against the Prophet predictions, seen below after your scores are inputted.

If the players beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films then the top individual player finisher wins the prize pot that includes Everything Must Go and Scarface on Blu-ray. The Prophet won 5-0 in the last round and was the top overall player, so it's time for the players to strike back.

Player prediction average scores will update below in real time as new predictions are entered. This round's entry period closes at 8:30pm PST on Thursday, October 6. View each week's individual player results on the game hub page.

There are currently 34 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for October 7 - 9 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

The Ides of March
George Clooney's latest has a solid 77 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Plus, it co-stars Ryan Gosling who has climbed the Hollywood popularity charts this year. What will hold back The Ides of March from competing for the top spot is its 2,000 screen count and R-rating.
All: $14.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $11.6   Actual: $0.0
Real Steel
This is one of the easiest picks for the number one spot this year. Real Steel will come out on top, and probably by a margin of $10 million or more. It's got summer-type visual effects with the rock 'em, sock 'em boxing robots, Hugh Jackman, and 3,300 screens to work with.
All: $25.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $25.8   Actual: $0.0
Dolphin Tale
Dolphin Tale won last weekend with $13.9 million, a 27% drop from last weekend. The Lion King's departure should aid Dolphin Tale this weekend, especially with no new violence-free family entertainment. Expect another minimal drop.
All: $10.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.8   Actual: $0.0
Moneyball
Moneyball enters its third weekend after a 38% drop last weekend. The MLB playoffs should keep interest in the baseball drama relatively high, but don't expect it to top the $10 million mark. I'd count on another similar drop as last weekend.
All: $8.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $8.1   Actual: $0.0
50/50
50/50 is the lone newcomer from last weekend to make it to this round. That pretty much guarantees it a fifth place finish, so keep that in mind when making your predictions. Whatever Moneyball and The Ides of March make, this will make less.
All: $7.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $5.3   Actual: $0.0
