Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Panda Fights a Hangover

May 26, 2011

A pair of sequels in The Hangover Part II starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, along with Kung Fu Panda 2, square off at the box office this weekend for the right to knock Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides out of the top spot.

In this new round of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you are tasked with predicting what these three films along with Marvel's Thor and Bridesmaids will make at the box office between Friday, May 27 and Sunday, May 29. All the player predictions will be averaged together to face off against The Prophet's prediction to see which side can win 3 or more of the films.

In the last round, the players won 3-2 so top player finisher vläd takes home the Blu-ray prize. The new prize for this round is Born to Raise Hell on Blu-ray.

Predictions made by you and other players will immediately update the average predictions below. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, May 26. Get those predictions in before the sun sets.

There are currently 36 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for May 27 - 29 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

The Hangover Part II
The original Hangover opened to $45 million almost exactly two years ago. Word of mouth then vaulted it to over $277 million before leaving theaters. Part II will easily open higher than the original and could possibly double it. It opens on over 3600 screens, 400 more than the original.
All: $73.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $98.3   Actual: $85.9
Kung Fu Panda 2
The adults get a sequel with The Hangover so why not the kids, too? Kung Fu Panda 2 is reviewing stronger than Hangover and should easily beat the original's $60 million opening based on nearly 4,000 screens. Whether it can beat The Hangover Part II is another story.
All: $67.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $89.2   Actual: $47.7
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
The current isn't as strong with Pirates 4 as the previous installments given the $90.2 million opening, the lowest since the original despite 3D. Hangover 2 and Kung Fu Panda 2 will surely eat into the Pirates bounty. $50 million looks like a long shot.
All: $39.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $40.4   Actual: $39.8
Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids enjoyed a mere 20% drop last weekend in making nearly $21 million. Expect a bigger drop this time around as audiences flock to The Hangover Part II and Bridesmaids becomes the second option for those seeking adult humor.
All: $13.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.6   Actual: $16.6
Thor
The mighty Thor keeps hanging around as it enters its fourth weekend. Last weekend it made $15.5 million, a nearly 56% drop from the previous weekend. This could be the weekend that Thor dips under $10 million and starts its march toward home video.
All: $8.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.0   Actual: $9.5
