Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Owls, Ladies and Gordon Gekko

September 22, 2010

Michael Dougles as Gordon Gekko returns to the big screen in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the frontrunner to finish atop the box office results this upcoming weekend. Standing in Gekko and co-star Shia LaBeouf's path is Zack Snyder's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, the female comedy You Again starring Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, Odette Yustman and Betty White, and holdovers The Town from Ben Affleck and Easy A with Emma Stone.

Your goal in this weekly game is to predict what each of these 5 films will make at the box office this upcoming Friday, September 24 through Sunday, September 26. Your predictions will be averaged in with the other players to go up against The Prophet predictions. Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win the following: Date Night (Blu-ray), The Diplomat (Blu-ray), NCIS Los Angeles: The Complete First Season (DVD), Machine Gun McCain (Blu-ray), $5 A Day (Blu-ray) and this week's new addition, Wall Street: Insider Trading Edition (DVD) . If the Prophet comes out on top then these prizes will roll into the next round and be joined by a seventh and the top player finisher will receive a consolation DVD.

Once you are successfully logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, September 23, with this round's results being published sometime Monday in our box office actuals report.

There are currently 58 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for September 24-26 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
From the studio that brought us Happy Feet. From the director of 300. Opening on over 3,500 screens including 3D and IMAX. Not to mention it looks stunning. There are many reasons to see this film, but are more serious talking owls as interesting as goofy talking penguins?
All: $22.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.4   Actual: $16.1
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Gordon Gekko is back, though he's not the central character in the sequel to Wall Street. That honor goes to Shia LaBeouf who finds himself in contact with the recently freed father of his fiancee. A robust 3,400 screen opening and Michael Douglas' battle with cancer should help boost ticket sales.
All: $24.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $27.8   Actual: $19.0
You Again
This weekend's lighter fare comes from the unusual collection of Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, Odette Yustman and Betty White. There are certainly some ass kicking ladies in that group. Especially Betty. You Again opens on just over 2,300 screens.
All: $13.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $8.2   Actual: $8.4
The Town
The Town comes off a big $23.8 million opening last weekend which earned it to the top box office spot. Word of mouth continues to spread so expect Ben Affleck's second directorial effort to enjoy another strong weekend with a less than 50% drop from the last.
All: $14.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $15.8   Actual: $15.6
Easy A
Easy A didn't too shabby in its premiere last weekend either with a respectable $17.7 million total. The problem Easy A will encounter is most interested in seeing it already have. Though reviews have been strong, its weekly performance the past couple days has been less than half that of The Town.
All: $9.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.6   Actual: $10.6
