Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Newcomers Need Help Against Apes
August 11, 2011
Rise of the Planet of the Apes will face four new films at the box office this weekend and stands poised to topple them all.
The greatest threat should come from Final Destination 5 in 3D, while realistically The Help starring Emma Stone, 30 Minutes or Less with Jesse Eisenberg, and Fox's Glee The 3D Concert Movie don't have a chance of budging Caesar from his current reign.
Let's have some fun with predicting what each of these five films will make at the box office this weekend from Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 14. Once registered at this site, you can enter your predictions below and contribute to the overall players average prediction score. That average score will be measured against The Prophet's prediction to see who comes out on top.
In the last round, The Prophet narrowly won 3-2. Additionally, the top player finisher can be seen on the main game page with Desert11 scoring those honors.
Note: This is the last round that will be launching Thursday morning. Next weekend's round will launch a day earlier on Wednesday.
Player predictions entered will update the average prediction scores below. We're looking to top 50 players in this round to consider adding a prize for the winner in the next round. This round's entry period closes tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, August 11.
| There are currently 37 players up against the Prophet The entry period for August 12 - 14 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
The HelpThe Help got a jump start on the competition with a mid-week release on Wednesday. It's relying on the up-and-coming star power of Emma Stone coupled with being based off an extremely popular book. A 2,500 screen opening should allow for modest business, but don't expect The Help to challenge for the top. All: $18.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $16.7 Actual: $26.0
30 Minutes or LessFrom the director of Zombieland comes another offbeat comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg. Reviews have been mixed thus far and the narrow range of appeal will keep it from exploding at the box office. Expect an opening somewhere in the teens off 2,600 screens. All: $17.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $15.5 Actual: $13.3
Final Destination 5Yet another Final Destination is headed our way, the second in glorious 3D. This franchise has become the new Saw which will eventually translate into diminishing returns. Are people burnt out on the creative deaths yet? 3D plus over 3,100 screens give it a shot at challenging Apes for the top. All: $26.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $21.1 Actual: $18.0
Glee The 3D Concert MovieFox is trying to make a few extra bucks off Glee with a new 3D concert film. The problem is most people will probably prefer their Glee for free on TV, and I don't get the impression that Glee's audience is craving 3D performances. The die hards will come out, though, but there's no way it finishes top 5. Opens on 1,800 screens.
All: $12.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $5.8 Actual: $6.0
Rise of the Planet of the ApesThe apes stunned mankind last weekend and opened with a massive $54.8 million, basically double initial studio estimates. The past few weekdays have treated Caesar and friends well, too, with daily grosses topping $6 million. Apes has the fast track on winning the weekend again, and might even cross $100 million on Sunday. All: $29.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $27.4 Actual: $27.8 |
