Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Knight & Day vs. Grown Ups

June 22, 2010

Toy Story 3 comes into this box office weekend the champion after easily clearing $100 million and sending moviegoers home in tears. This weekend it will have to contend with Knight & Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, and Grown Ups with Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Chris Rock for an encore first place finish.

Knight & Day, Grown Ups and Toy Story 3 are joined by The Karate Kid and The A-Team in our weekly interactive Weekend Box Office Prophet game. The goal of the game is to predict what these five films will make in millions of dollars from Friday, June 25 through Sunday, June 27. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions (view the overall leaderboard or last week's results).

Important: Knight & Day opens Wednesday, June 23. We will only be counting its Friday, June 25 through Sunday, June 27 totals for the game so factor that into your prediction.

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win the following films on Blu-ray. A tie rules in favor of the players.

  • Circle of Pain on Blu-ray
  • NEW THIS WEEK: Showgirls NC-17 15th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray
If the Prophet comes out on top then both prizes will rollover into the next round and be joined by a third. We will still award a small DVD prize to the top place finisher in the event that happens.

Once you are successfully logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, June 24, with this round's results being published Monday evening when the final box office numbers are released.

There are currently 40 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for June 25 - 27 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Knight & Day
This film is one of the lesser publicized Tom Cruise headliners to hit theaters in some time. Critical reactions have been mixed, but apparently those who liked it were pleasantly surprised. It won't be Toy Story 3, but it should challenge The A-Team's $25.7 million opening. It opens on over 3,000 screens.
All: $27.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $19.3   Actual: $20.1
Grown Ups
Comedians Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider act like immature idiots in his comedy where growing up is optional. The box office has been lacking laughs could propel Grown Ups higher than it deserves. It opens on over 3,200 screens.
All: $28.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $21.6   Actual: $40.5
Toy Story 3
Toy Story 3's second go around should be enough for first place again. I wonder how many people will avoid encore viewings because of the "crying" factor. Or maybe that will bring them back for more. Toy Story 3 made $110.3 million last weekend, while Toy Story 2 dropped nearly 52% in its second weekend.
All: $64.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $53.7   Actual: $59.3
The Karate Kid (2010)
The Karate Kid dropped only 46.3 percent from its first weekend to its second, good enough for $29.9 million after a huge $55 million opening. It will lose some screens to Knight & Day and Grown Ups but shouldn't suffer a humongous drop heading into weekend number 3.
All: $21.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $15.3   Actual: $15.5
The A-Team
The A-Team held relatively strong after a slightly soft opening with only a 43.9 percent drop from its first weekend to its second. The $14.4 million total last weekend will likely be cut in half with Knight & Day luring away adrenaline seekers.
All: $8.3   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.2   Actual: $6.2
