Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Iron Man 2
May 04, 2010

As Iron Man 2 looms, the Prophet fell to the players 1-3-1 (
see the results) in last weekend's round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet Game. Player
codyunderblood came out on top and will take home The Twilight Saga: New Moon on Blu-ray Disc for their efforts.
The next round of our weekly interactive game is the first we have launched in the summer blockbuster season. Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 will be the deciding factor this round as it blasts into theaters with huge expectations. Holdovers from last week including A Nightmare on Elm Street, Furry Vengeance, Date Night and How to Train Your Dragon are also in this round.
The game's objective is to guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for these five films from Friday, May 7 through Sunday, May 9. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions.
Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win Elektra: Director's Cut on Blu-ray Disc as a nice Marvel tie-in with Iron Man 2. A tie goes in favor of the players.
If the Prophet wins then this prize will rollover into the next round and be joined by another. We will still award a small prize to the top place finisher should that happen (view the overall leaderboard).
Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, May 6, with this round's results being published in the next round's game page next Tuesday.
| There are currently 62 players up against the Prophet The entry period for May 7 - May 9 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
Iron Man 2Iron Man 2 marks the first big summer movie to appear in our game since it launched last fall. Studio estimates are falling anywhere between $120 to $160 million for the three-day weekend, just within the range of the $158.4 record held by The Dark Knight. Iron Man 2 will be huge, but can it beat Batman? All: $137.5 Me: n/a Prophet: $146.7 Actual: $128.1
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)Whatever little momentum the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake found in its opening weekend is likely to be extinguished by Iron Man's return. The $32.9 opening weekend was strong, but expect a fairly sizable drop because of the genre and the stiff new competition. Anything in the teens would be considered a success. All: $15.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $15.1 Actual: $9.1
How to Train Your DragonLast weekend was this film's sixth and it still managed 2nd place with $10.6 million, a 31% drop from the previous weekend. With Iron Man 2 sellouts inevitable, How to Train Your Dragon may pick up some of the disgruntled moviegoers. A similar or smaller drop over the past two weekends is likely. All: $8.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $8.4 Actual: $6.7
Date NightWe foolishly left Date Night out of the game last weekend and it finished 3rd. Oops. It's back coming off $7.6 million in its fourth week of release and still pulling in adult audiences looking for some light laughs. This could also benefit from Iron Man 2 sellouts. All: $5.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $6.5 Actual: $5.4
Furry VengeanceHow low will Furry Vengeance go? With such a huge margin for error on Iron Man 2, consider this a gimme to help offset any potential huge miss this round. Vengeance was anything but in its opening frame last weekend with a measly $6.6 million. It would be lucky to hit half of that this upcoming weekend. All: $3.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $3.2 Actual: $4.5 |
