Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Hop the Source Code Train
March 31, 2011

Universal's Hop is hoping to hop all over Summit's Source Code with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan at the April Fools box office this weekend, while Insidious with Rose Byrne hopes to creep into a top three finish.
In our Weekend Box Office Predictions game, your predictions for these three films plus holdovers Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules and Sucker Punch will be averaged in with other players to go up against our Prophet predictions. If the players beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the films, then the top player performer will take home the prize pot.
In the last round the Prophet won 4-1 so Jackass 3 on Blu-ray and The Fighter on Blu-ray are still up for grabs, now joined by Morning Glory on Blu-ray. That's 3 Blu-ray movies to the top player if the Prophet can be beat.
The average player scores will update in real time below as new player predictions are added. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, March 31. You can view the overall leaderboard here. Good luck.
| There are currently 40 players up against the Prophet The entry period for April 1 - 3 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
HopUniversal is hoping to repeat the success of Despicable Me with the next feature from Illumination Entertainment. Hop should find success by the tie-in with Easter and the huge 3,400 screens its opening on. As long as Universal continues to advertise "from the makers of Despicable Me, Hop should do OK. All: $26.9 Me: n/a Prophet: $24.7 Actual: $37.5
InsidiousLike Hop, Insidious will be banking on its makers pedigree to help drum up some business. Even though this flick is from the makers of Paranormal Activity, it's an odd weekend to release a horror film other than as counter-programming against the competition. Insidious is the underdog opening on 2,400 screens. All: $12.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $10.2 Actual: $13.3
Source CodeSource Code is a tough one to predict. "From the director of Moon" won't mean anything outside cinephile or geek circles. Jake Gyllenhaal is a draw, but the sci-fi story and jumping around in time might be a turnoff for the women that would come just to see him. It opens on 2,800 screens. All: $18.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $14.9 Actual: $14.8
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick RulesRodrick Rules did just that its opening weekend to the tune of $23.8 million, over $1 million more than the original Wimpy Kid film made its opening weekend. Hop will certainly overshadow Rodrick to draw the younger crowds which could translate to a 50% or more drop like the original experienced. All: $13.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $11.5 Actual: $10.0
Sucker PunchSucker Punch could be approaching a dramatic drop-off in business its second weekend after running behind Limitless at the box office this past week. The arrival of Source Code won't help any as it's geared toward a similar audience. Sucker Punch could have strong Friday and Saturday night showings, but don't expect much from the matinees. All: $10.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $8.0 Actual: $6.0 |
