Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Funeral by Kick-Ass

April 13, 2010

Before we begin this new round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, a big congratulations goes out to matias cabrera. After the Prophet and players tied 2-2-1 in the last round, I decided the jackpot had grown big enough (see it and last week's result) and gave the advantage to the players. So top place finisher Matias is the proud owner of 7 new Blu-ray Discs and 1 DVD while our jackpot resets with something I know you all want.

For this next round, Lionsgate's Kick-Ass with Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloë Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is poised to slaughter the competition and rise to the top. The other newcomer, Death at a Funeral with Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Tracy Morgan, will hope to avoid a swift death at the hands of wannabe superheroes. Carryover films from the last round include Clash of the Titans, Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey, and How to Train Your Dragon.

The object of the game is to guess the final domestic box office dollars in millions for these five films from Friday, April 16 through Sunday, April 18. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions.

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win James Cameron's Avatar on Blu-ray + DVD Combo Format disc. A tie goes in favor of the players.

If the Prophet wins then this prize will rollover into the next round and be joined by a ninth. We will still award a small prize to the top place finisher (view the overall leaderboard).

Once you are logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, April 15, with this round's results being published in the next round's game page next Tuesday. Good luck!

There are currently 58 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for April 16 - 18 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Death at a Funeral (2010)
The remake of Death at a Funeral sports a big ensemble cast and commercials so unfunny you'd swear someone was trying to keep you away from seeing it. Comedy star power draw with Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Tracy Morgan - amongst others - will effect the final say. Opens on over 2,400 screens.
All: $17.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $15.8   Actual: $16.3
Kick-Ass
Kick-Ass is poised to, well, kick some ass at the box office. It comes in riding wave after wave of positive geek-fueled reviews and sports one of the most colorful and politically incorrect 12-year old girl characters imaginable. Expect big returns from roughly 3,000 screens.
All: $34.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $43.7   Actual: $19.8
Clash of the Titans (2010)
Titans fell almost 57% from its opening weekend which was expected given word of mouth was not necessarily favorable. Still, $26.6 million in weekend #2 is strong and was good enough to sneak past Date Night. However, the arrival of Kick-Ass will put another big dent in Perseus' weakening armor.
All: $15.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $13.6   Actual: $15.4
Date Night
On Sunday evening it looked as if Date Night would oust Titans from the top spot. Then weekend actual numbers hit and the Carell/Fey duo had to settle for second place with $25.2 million. And it did so without 3D screens. Look for Date Night to drop at a slower place than Titans.
All: $16.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $15.7   Actual: $16.7
How to Train Your Dragon
The dragon that could shook off slow weekday numbers to pull in $24.9 million in its third weekend, a paltry 14.3% drop from the previous weekend. Once again it will have no new kid or family targeted competition, and 3D screen counts should remain steady. Look for another strong performance.
All: $18.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.5   Actual: $19.6
