Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Fast Five Will Speed to Victory
April 28, 2011

Universal's Fast Five starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and Tyrese Gibson will win this weekend at the box office. No doubt about it. The only question is how fast can it soar past the box office returns of 2009's Fast and Furious.
In this new round of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you are tasked with prediction what Fast Five and its fellow newcomers Prom, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night with Brandon Routh, and Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, along with holdover Rio, will make in ticket sales at the North American box office this weekend. Your score will be averaged in with the other player scores to go up against The Prophet with the winner being decided by whichever side wins 3 or more of the films.
If the players win then the prize jackpot will be awarded to the top player finisher for this round. In the last round, The Prophet took 3 of 5 and iced the cake by finishing top overall. Since the price jackpot of Jackass 3, The Fighter and Morning Glory on Blu-ray has been stagnant for weeks, I'm going to add Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition on Blu-ray to the mix in hopes the players will pick up their game and knock off The Prophet.
The average player scores will update in real time below as new player predictions are added. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, April 28. Get those predictions in fast and furiously.
| There are currently 40 players up against the Prophet The entry period for April 29 - May 1 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
Dylan Dog: Dead of NightDylan Dog: Dead of Night stars ex-Superman Brandon Routh as a nightmare investigator who has a zombie as his sidekick. The horror film should appear to comic book fans given the film's inspiration, but its box office potential is limited by a 1,000 screen count. All: $7.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $9.1 Actual: $0.8
Fast FiveFast Five is the first big summer movie opening and has already torn tracks through the box office in many foreign markets. Whatever number you're thinking, think higher. Fast Five stands a strong chance of topping the nearly $71 million Fast & Furious put up its opening weekend back in 2009. It opens on over 3,500 screens. All: $69.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $77.3 Actual: $86.2
Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. EvilThe Weinstein Company is hoping to ride the animated success of Rango, Rio and Hop to above average returns for their Hoodwinked sequel. The problem for Hoodwinked 2 is the original film came out 6 years ago and opened soft to just over $12 million. Don't expect big returns from the 2,500 screen count. All: $9.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $8.7 Actual: $4.1
PromCounter-programmed against Fast Five is Disney's Prom. It's a teen comedy that hopes to benefit some from the High School Musical craze. Prom could find itself battling for third place this weekend, but the lack of star power should keep its returns relatively grounded. Opens on 2,700 screens. All: $12.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $11.2 Actual: $4.7
RioRio's days of finishing first are about to come to an end, but what a run for the little blue bird it has been. So much so that Rio is widely expected to finish second far below Fast Five this weekend. Last weekend, Rio managed an impressive $26.3 million. Look for another double-digit performance. All: $17.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $16.9 Actual: $14.8 |
