Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Drive Angry Chases Hall Pass
February 23, 2011

Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis are hoping their Hall Pass grants them access to the top of the weekend box office charts. Standing in their way is Nicholas Cage in Drive Angry 3D along with the top holdovers Unknown with Liam Neeson, I Am Number Four with Alex Pettyfer, and Gnomeo & Juliet.
In this game you are tasked with predicting what these five films will make at the box office this upcoming weekend with your score averaged in with everyone else to go up against the Prophet prediction. We play this game weekly, and in the last round the players won 4-1 (despite the Prophet finishing second overall for the second round in a row) so top player scorer cinemaman1 takes home a pair of Blu-ray films.
The prize pot starts over this week with Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition on Blu-ray up for grabs and a random DVD going to the top player finisher if the Prophet wins 3 or more of the films. In that latter scenario the Blu-ray will roll into next week and be joined by another.
The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. This round's entry period will close at 8pm PST Thursday, February 24.
| There are currently 47 players up against the Prophet The entry period for February 25 - 27 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
Drive AngryNic Cage didn't exactly light up the box office with The Sorcerer's Apprentice or Season of the Witch. Unlike those films, Drive Angry 3D looks like Cage could actually have some fun with the character. It's a niche film and won't do mega-business, but it should do decently and maybe touch double figures off 2,200 screens. All: $15.5 Me: n/a Prophet: $10.2 Actual: $5.2
Hall PassHall Pass looks awful and I'm being kind in saying that. But it is opening on over 3,000 screens and Owen Wilson does have a way of attracting box office business. Comedy is doing well right now with Just Go With It so I wouldn't be surprised to see Hall Pass make a run for the top spot this weekend. All: $20.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $17.1 Actual: $13.5
UnknownUnknown is now known as the number one movie in America over President's Day weekend. Winning the weekend with $21.9 million means a sub-$20 million second frame that will make a repeat win difficult to obtain, especially with Hall Pass opening and the gnomes hanging around. All: $14.6 Me: n/a Prophet: $14.8 Actual: $12.6
I Am Number FourI Am Number Four was supposed to be the big opener last weekend but instead failed to reach the $20 million mark. Its per-theater average was actually lower than Gnomeo and Juliet, not a great sign for the sci-fi thriller as it tries to seek out some additional cash to spawn a sequel those who saw it want. All: $12.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $12.5 Actual: $11.0
Gnomeo and JulietAfter sitting out our game last weekend, Gnomeo and Juliet returns coming off a strong showing during the President's Day frame. It was neck-and-neck with I Am Number Four and could potentially finish above that newer film this weekend. The gnomes are hot and not to be underestimated. All: $13.6 Me: n/a Prophet: $12.7 Actual: $13.4 |
