Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Devil and Easy A Face Zombies
September 16, 2010

The Weekend Box Office Prophet Game is back after a week off and unfortunately launching late due to me being sick this week. My apologies.
After dominating the box office last weekend, Milla Jovovich and Resident Evil: Afterlife will face off against Devil from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan, Easy A with Emma Stone, the animated flick Alpha and Omega, and Ben Affeck's second turn behind the camera directing himself, Jon Hammm, Rebecca Hall, Chris Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively in The Town.
Your goal in the game is to predict what each of these 5 films will make at the box office this upcoming Friday, September 17 through Sunday, September 19. Your predictions will be averaged in with the other players to go up against The Prophet predictions. Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win Date Night (Blu-ray), The Diplomat (Blu-ray), NCIS Los Angeles: The Complete First Season (DVD), Machine Gun McCain (Blu-ray), as well as the additional new prize this week $5 A Day (Blu-ray) . If the Prophet comes out on top then these prizes will roll into the next round and be joined by a sixth and the top player finisher will score a consolation DVD prize. This the second largest pot of prizes that has been up for grabs.
Once you are successfully logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, September 16, with this round's results being published sometime Monday in our box office actuals report.
| There are currently 54 players up against the Prophet The entry period for September 17-19 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
Alpha and OmegaThis low key CGI animated flick has about the same buzz as Nanny McPhee Returns. Lionsgate would be extremely lucky if this topped $10 million its opening weekend. Remember Astro Boy? Think along those lines. Alpha and Omega opens on 2,500 screens. All: $7.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $7.2 Actual: $9.1
DevilFrom the mind of M. Night Shyamalan. Will that turn out to be a curse or a non-factor for Devil, the movie that makes a power outage the least of your elevator riding fears? Remember, Shyamalan thought it up. He did not direct it. Devil opens on over 2,700 screens. All: $15.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $13.6 Actual: $12.3
Easy AMy fellow Arizonian and Zombieland co-star Emma Stone finally gets top billing in Easy A, the well reviewed high school comedy that has the potential to develop a Mean Girls cult following. This could be the movie that launches Emma into superstardom. Easy A opens on 2,800 screens. All: $15.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $17.4 Actual: $17.7
The TownBen Affleck returns to the director's chair after Gone Baby Gone and is getting decent reviews for his bank heist drama The Town. The film has the potential to snag The American's audience and open somewhere between $10 and $20 million. It opens on over 2,700 screens. All: $16.6 Me: n/a Prophet: $16.1 Actual: $23.8
Resident Evil: AfterlifeLast weekend the fourth Resident Evil film and first in 3D easily beat the competition with $26.7 million at the box office. The previous RE film, Extinction, opened with $4 million less but then suffered a huge 66% dip its second weekend. Will Afterlife follow in those footsteps? All: $12.7 Me: n/a Prophet: $12.3 Actual: $10.0 |
