Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Brad Pitt and Taylor Lautner Track The Lion King
September 22, 2011
The Lion King roared into theaters last weekend and easily stomped on the competition, more than doubling many studio estimates in the first of its two weekends of re-release.
Four newcomers hope to catch Simba before he runs away with the top spot again. Those new films are Abduction with Taylor Lautner, Moneyball with Brad Pitt, Killer Elite with Jason Statham, and Warner's Dolphin Tale.
You can take part in predicting what each of these films will make at the box office this weekend in our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game. To play, simply make sure you're logged into our site and then enter what each of these films will make from this Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25 in the boxes below.
The game automatically adds your predictions in with the other players to formulate an average predictions score that goes up against our Prophet predictions. In the last round, the Prophet beat the players on 3 of the 5 films so that round's prize, Everything Must Go on Blu-ray, is still up for grabs in this round if the player can beat the Prophet by winning 3, 4 or 5 of the predictions.
Player prediction average scores will automatically update below as new predictions are entered. This round's entry period closes at 8:30pm PST on Thursday, September 22. View each week's individual player results here.
| There are currently 36 players up against the Prophet The entry period for September 23 - 25 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
AbductionTaylor Lautner, considered by many in Hollywood to be the next A-list action star, takes his step away from the comforts of Twilight in this Lionsgate thriller. Reviews have been decent, but don't expect a Twilight box office explosion when it opens on 3,000 screens. All: $18.1 Me: n/a Prophet: $13.1 Actual: $10.9
Dolphin TaleWarner Bros. hopes to steal some of Disney's The Lion King business with this family film based on a true story. It opens on a similar screen count as Abduction with 3,200, and should finish the weekend with a similar box office gross. All: $15.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $12.6 Actual: $19.2
Killer EliteKiller Elite gets the smallest opening this weekend in the neighborhood of 2,700 screens. Without a big studio behind it, the Jason Statham action flick will have a hard time ascending the top 5 against films with much larger marketing budgets. All: $13.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $7.2 Actual: $9.4
MoneyballMoneyball is going to sell tickets not because of its story of baseball and business, but because it stars Brad Pitt and is co-written by Aaron Sorkin. If any film has a shot at pushing Simba off Pride Rock then it's this film. Opens on just under 3,000 screens. All: $20.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $16.8 Actual: $19.5
The Lion King 3DThis is the last weekend The Lion King will be in theaters after enjoying a huge $30.2 million opening weekend. I'm thinking it's going to win again as parents love the film from earlier in their lives, and this is the last shot for their kids to see it up on the big screen. All: $20.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $20.5 Actual: $21.9 |
