Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Avatar, Stallone, Demons and Takers

August 25, 2010

This latest round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet Game marks one year since it first debuted late last summer. Since then I've seen the number of players on average tick up to over 50 per week. To you all I say thanks for playing and here's to another year of predicting movie grosses.

James Cameron's Avatar returns this round to score some more green with a new special edition release. But a limited engagement will make it tough for the Na'vi and friends to compete for the top spot. Expected to take on The Expendables for the weekend box office throne are The Last Exorcism (produced by Eli Roth) and Takers with Chris Brown and Hayden Christensen. To round out the field of five I tossed in Piranha 3D over Lottery Ticket due to the former scoring a quick sequel.

The goal of the game is to predict what each of these films will make at the box office between Friday, August 27 and Sunday, August 29. Your predictions will be averaged in with the other players to go up against The Prophet predictions.

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win Date Night and The Diplomat on Blu-ray as holdovers from past rounds, as well as a special anniversary prize NCIS Los Angeles: The Complete First Season on DVD. If the Prophet comes out on top then these prizes will roll into the next round and be joined by a fourth. We will still award a small DVD prize to the top player finisher should this occur (overall game leaderboard).

Once you are successfully logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, August 26, with this round's results being published sometime Monday in our box office actuals report. Now get predicting!

There are currently 62 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for August 27 - 29 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Avatar: Special Edition
It's baaaack. Avatar returns to the big screen with 8 additional minutes tacked onto its already substantial runtime. The catch is that 100% of the approximately 700 screens that will be showing this new special edition will be either 3D or 3D IMAX. Are you willing to pay the inflated price for some new footage?
All: $12.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $5.3   Actual: $4.0
The Last Exorcism
Back in 2005, Sony Screen Gems' The Exorcism of Emily Rose enjoyed a huge $30 million opening on 2,900 screens. With a similar screen count and inflated ticket prices over the past 5 years, Lionsgate has their fingers crossed for similar success from this bendy-lady creep fest. It opens on 2,700 screens.
All: $20.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $14.1   Actual: $20.4
Takers
Takers fills the role of an urban crime and an alternative to pretty much everything else this upcoming weekend. A piddly 2,000 screen count and headlining act of Chris Brown and Hayden Christensen will have a hard time cracking the $20 million mark.
All: $12.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.5   Actual: $20.5
The Expendables
Can The Expendables take its third straight weekend? There's a chance if Takers and The Last Exorcism find themselves DOA like just about every film last weekend did. Last weekend The Expendables made $17 million, a 51% drop from its opening weekend.
All: $10.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $9.8   Actual: $9.5
Piranha 3D
Piranha 3D managed only $10.1 million during its opening frame last weekend. Consider it a given to finish in single-digits this weekend. How low the fish will sink depends on whether the continuing positive buzz and news of a sequel moving forward will put more butts in the seats.
All: $6.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $6.3   Actual: $4.3
