Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Arthur Battles Hop

April 07, 2011

Universal's Hop is the favorite to win the box office battle this weekend, but Warner Bros. is hoping their remake of Arthur starring Russell Brand, Jennifer Garner and Helen Mirren will make some noise. Meanwhile, skilled young girls Saoirse Ronan and AnnaSophia Robb are the main attraction in Hanna and Soul Surfer, respectively, while Your Highness hopes to ride the name power of Natalie Portman, Danny McBride, James Franco and Zooey Deschanel to a decent opening.

In our weekly Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you are given the opportunity to predict what each of these 5 films will make at the box office from Friday, April 8 through Sunday, April 10. Your score is averaged in with the other players to go up against our Prophet prediction in a heads-to-head battle.

If the Prophet wins 3 or more of the films against the players, then the Blu-ray prize pot of Jackass 3, The Fighter and Morning Glory will be awarded to the top player. If the Prophet wins, as he barely did 3-2 in the last round, then the prize pot rolls into the next round.

The average player scores will update in real time below as new player predictions are added. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, April 7. View the overall player leaderboard here, and best of luck!

There are currently 45 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for April 8 - 10 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Arthur (2011)
Russell Brand takes on the impossible task of embodying the exceptional performance of Dudley Moore in this modern day remake of Arthur. Though the film is opening on over 3,200 screens, reviews thus far have been somewhere between bad and worse. The "Brand" factor might propel Arthur higher than it deserves.
All: $17.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $16.7   Actual: $12.2
Hanna
Hanna is reviewing exceptionally well which could translate into stronger than expected audiences for its opening weekend. There's definitely a ceiling considering it opens on only 2,500 screens and its star is a teenager. Don't expect too many adult audiences to rush to this one like they would Taken.
All: $13.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.3   Actual: $12.4
Soul Surfer
Another film with a young female star, only this one is a sports drama vs the action thriller that Hanna is. Carrie Underwood makes her acting debut, but also like Hanna, there's a scant 2,100 screens which puts its ceiling around the $10 million mark.
All: $9.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $9.7   Actual: $10.6
Your Highness
Your Highness sports an impressive cast with recent Oscar nominee James Franco and Oscar winner Natalie Portman, amongst others. But reviews have been atrocious, and if there's one thing Universal has been perfecting over the past few years, it's how to set off a bomb. Opens on 2,600 screens.
All: $13.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.5   Actual: $9.4
Hop
Universal may be struggling with live-action fare, but their past two animated releases have both been hits. Hop enters its second weekend closer to Easter than its first. It blew away expectations with $37.5 million last weekend and stands a strong chance of finishing first yet again.
All: $24.3   Me: n/a   Prophet: $24.8   Actual: $21.3
