Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Angelina Jolie Takes on Aslan
December 07, 2010

Can the power combo of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp sink the Dawn Treader this weekend? Not likely, but they should make enough of a splash to secure a second place finish this upcoming weekend at the North American box office.
In this latest installment of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you are tasked with predicting the Friday, December 10 through Sunday, December 12 box office totals for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Tourist, along with holdovers from last week Tangled, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and Burlesque. Your predictions can be entered below once successfully logged into our site.
If the players' average predictions beat the Prophet's predictions for 3 or more of the films then the prize pot currently holding Mad Max on Blu-ray and Shaun of the Dead on DVD will go to the top finisher. If the Prophet wins the majority of film predictions then those two prizes will roll into next week, a consolation DVD prize will go to the top place finisher, and another prize will be added next if the total number of players is 50 or more.
The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 8pm PST Thursday, December 9. Good luck to all.
| There are currently 55 players up against the Prophet The entry period for December 10-12 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn TreaderThe third Narnia adventure is the first from Fox and, based on the ads, promises a darker story and some gnarly dragons. The last two Narnia films opened to $65 and $55 million weekends in July and December, respectively. Those did not have the added benefit of 3D ticket prices like Dawn Treader does when it opens on 3,500 screens. All: $51.3 Me: n/a Prophet: $40.5 Actual: $24.0
The TouristWith no-name actors The Tourist looks like another forgettable thriller. With Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp riding shotgun, arguably the most powerful woman and man in Hollywood, all bets go out the window. This dynamic duo pairing that mixes action and romance could surprise to the upside when it opens on 2,600 screens. All: $28.5 Me: n/a Prophet: $25.8 Actual: $16.5
Tangled 3DTangled pulled off the upset last weekend and beat out Harry Potter for the top spot with $21.6 million in its second weekend. Narnia could eat into Tangled's business a little but it will still remain the top draw for younger audiences and will continue to benefit from 3D ticket prices. All: $14.2 Me: n/a Prophet: $14.1 Actual: $14.3
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part IHarry Potter enters his fourth weekend still pulling in strong business despite a relatively fast fade from its earlier huge highs. Last weekend the boy wizard managed $17 million, good enough for second place but a 65.3% drop from the previous weekend. Narnia will certainly steal some Potter business so another 60% or so drop is not entirely out of the question. All: $10.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $9.6 Actual: $8.5
BurlesqueBringing up the rear this weekend is Sony's song and dance number, Burlesque. It pulled in $6.1 million last weekend, its second, and will be hard-pressed to top $5 million with The Tourist aiming to corner the adult audience market. All: $3.8 Me: n/a Prophet: $2.7 Actual: $3.2 |
