Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: 80s Again with The A-Team and Karate Kid

June 08, 2010

Sony's remake of The Karate Kid starring Will Smith's son, Jaden, and Jackie Chan is aiming high at the box office this weekend. Fox's The A-Team, bolstered by Liam Neeson, Sharlto Copley and Bradley Cooper, also hopes to ride a wave of nostalgia to box office success. A trip back to the 80's might be just what Hollywood needs to break a now two-week ticket sales slump.

Both these newcomers will be joined by holdovers Shrek Forever After, Get Him to the Greek and Killers in our weekly interactive Weekend Box Office Prophet game. The goal of the game is to predict what these five films will make in millions of dollars from Friday, June 11 through Sunday, June 13. Your prediction is averaged in with the other players for a cumulative score to compete against the Prophet predictions (view the overall leaderboard).

Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win the following films on Blu-ray. A tie rules in favor of the players.

  • High Anxiety on Blu-ray
  • Robin Hood: Men in Tights on Blu-ray
  • The Wolfman on Blu-ray
  • Near Dark on Blu-ray
  • NEW THIS WEEK: Tetro on Blu-ray

If the Prophet wins, which he has for a month running now, then all five prizes will rollover into the next round and be joined by a sixth. We will still award a small DVD prize to the top place finisher in the event that happens.

Once you are successfully logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, June 10, with this round's results being published next week. Good luck.

There are currently 56 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for June 11 - 13 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

The A-Team
The A-Team returns and from the looks of the trailers, tv spots and clips, it will be a heck of a lot of fun. Fox is banking on a combination of nostalgia and big names Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper to carry The A-Team to the top this weekend. I suspect they'll have a rough time doing so. Opens on 3,000+ screens.
All: $33.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $36.6   Actual: $25.7
The Karate Kid (2010)
Sony is hoping for good things from The Karate Kid remake and all signs points towards a strong opening. Family audiences are getting sick of Shrek so with Toy Story 3 not quite here yet, Jaden Smith should reap the box office rewards. Opens on a pretty high 3,400 screens.
All: $29.8   Me: n/a   Prophet: $39.2   Actual: $55.7
Shrek Forever After
Sorry Shrek, but this is the weekend you lose your top spot. Consider three consecutive weekends in first an outstanding achievement for a film many, myself included, wrote off before it hit theaters. Not even last weekend's $25 million total will be enough for first, much less what this weekend brings.
All: $16.3   Me: n/a   Prophet: $14.7   Actual: $15.8
Get Him to the Greek
Get Him to the Greek enjoyed a relatively strong $17.6 million opening. Word of mouth has been generally strong which could spur another double-digit weekend in the face of its main competition, The A-Team. It's the only competitive R-rated film at the box office right now.
All: $12.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $11.9   Actual: $9.9
Killers
Killers rode the names of Kutcher and Heigl to a $15.6 million opening frame last weekend, much more than if the same story had less recognizable names attached to it. The reviews were poor, word of mouth nonexistent, and chance to hit double-digits again next to nil.
All: $8.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $8.9   Actual: $8.0
