Weekend Box Office Predictions: Cars 2 in the Pole Position

June 23, 2011

After a several week hiatus due to numerous uncontrollable reasons, the Weekend Box Office Prophet Game has returned with Cars 2 and Bad Teacher battling a collection of strong holdovers for box office supremacy.

In this game you are tasked with predicting what Cars 2 and Bad Teacher, along with Green Lantern, Mr. Popper's Penguins and Super 8 will make at the box office between Friday, June 24 and Sunday, June 26. Your predictions will be averaged in with the other players to go up against The Prophet as well as be judged individually.

If the players beats The Prophet on 3 or more of the films then the top player finisher will take home Company Men on Blu-ray. If The Prophet wins then the prize will roll into next week and be joined by another.

In the Moviebob takes home Born to Raise Hell on Blu-ray as a result.

Predictions entered will immediately update the average prediction scores below. This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, June 23.

There are currently 49 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for June 24 - 26 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Bad Teacher
Bad Teacher hopes to share in the same success that fellow R-rated comedies The Hangover Part II and Bridesmaids have enjoyed. It opens on a relatively strong 3,000 screens and while it isn't expected to compete with Cars 2 for the top spot, odds are favorable it will coast into second place.
All: $25.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $23.7   Actual: $31.6
Cars 2
Cars 2 will drive into the top spot this weekend. It will probably beat the $60.1 million opening that the original Cars enjoyed for no other reason than the surcharge that 3D screens will enjoy. The childish antics in the trailers might keep many adults who flocked to Toy Story 3 away and could keep Cars 2 from really opening big.
All: $66.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $63.4   Actual: $66.1
Green Lantern
Green Lantern blasted off to a $53.2 million opening last weekend which was below expectations. Even more damaging for the film was a steep drop in attendance after its first day. With Cars 2 and Bad Teacher on the scene and word of mouth not exactly shining, Green Lantern is looking at a sharp drop heading into its second weekend.
All: $23.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $20.5   Actual: $18.0
Mr. Popper's Penguins
Jim Carrey made off with a decent $18.4 million last weekend with his penguin costars. Like Green Lantern, the arrival Cars 2 will take a chunk out of the second weekend for Mr. Popper's Penguins which will have to fight tooth and nail to reach the $10 million mark.
All: $10.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $9.7   Actual: $10.1
Super 8
Super 8 enters its third weekend coming off a $21.5 million second weekend. That equates to a 39.4 percent drop from its opening weekend. A similar drop is expected this weekend as word of mouth continues to be strong for the J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg collaboration.
All: $15.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.6   Actual: $12.0
