Weekend Box Office Predictions: Big Returns for Pirates of the Caribbean

May 19, 2011

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails into the domestic box office this weekend as the only new wide release. Other studios knew better than to go up against the Disney juggernaut with Johnny Depp at the helm. Thor, Bridesmaids, Fast Five and Priest all have their fingers crossed that the Pirates don't completely pillage their weekend returns.

In this new installment of our Weekend Box Office Prophet Game, you are tasked with predicting what Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and the four holdover films will make in theaters this weekend between Friday, May 20 and Sunday, May 22. Your prediction will be averaged in with the other players to go against The Prophet's. Three or more films won by the players will result in the top player finisher taking home the Blu-ray prize pot. The Prophet winning three or more means the pot rolls into the next round and is added to.

The players won the last round 3-2 so slugbug takes home Skyline on Blu-ray. The new prize is Muay Thai Giant on Blu-ray.

The average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions by fellow players are entered This round's entry period will close tonight at 9pm PST Thursday, May 19. Be sure to get in your predictions before the game entry period closes and the ship sets sail.

There are currently 38 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for May 20 - 22 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Where Captain Jack Sparrow goes, money follows. The question for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film is not whether it will win the weekend or not. It will, by a lot. But if it will cross the $100 million mark in its first three days. Pirates 3 opened to $114.7 million back in 2007 without the benefit of 3D. Are people getting burned out on this series? Opens on 4,000 screens.
All: $96.2   Me: n/a   Prophet: $98.6   Actual: $90.2
Thor
Thor enters this third weekend having won two in a row. Last weekend it hauled in $34.7 million, a 47% drop from its opening frame. Pirates 4 will steal many of Thor's 3D screens, plus Bridesmaids has been beating Thor during the past few days, so expect a similar if not bigger drop this weekend.
All: $18.6   Me: n/a   Prophet: $17.2   Actual: $15.5
Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids soared past expectations last weekend by opening to the tune of $26.2 million, nearly double what studios were thinking it would make. It's continued playing strong during this past week, and could see some spillover from Pirates 4 sellouts.
All: $16.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $18.8   Actual: $20.9
Fast Five
Fast Five revs into its fourth weekend after sustaining only a 37% drop from the previous weekend. As with Thor, Pirates 4 is sure to steal some of its business and push it lower. Another strong weekend could send it close to the $200 million mark.
All: $12.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $12.7   Actual: $10.6
Priest 3D
The only reason Priest is here is because Pirates 4 is the only new opener this weekend. Otherwise Priest would be long gone. As it stands, Priest opened to $15 million last weekend and like most horror films should see a sizable drop in it second weekend.
All: $7.0   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.2   Actual: $4.8
