To recap the previous episode, it began with Tyreese and Karen getting close and cuddly as their relationship continues to mature. As we know in the world of The Walking Dead, whenever something is painted to be rosy, it's a set up for the tables to turn with the worst yet to come. That's exactly what happened to the budding relationship between Tyreese and Karen.
The mysterious illness that started in animals moved to humans and sent freshly zombified Patrick into cell block D where he caused the death of at least 12 prison inhabitants. Those who survived and lived in that cell block, including Rick, Daryl and others that came to their aid, have now come into contact with the sickness and consider themselves infected. Based on the close proximity Daryl has been with Patrick, including hours before his death, it does appear the illness does not affect everyone. In fact, it might even be targeting former residents of Woodbury.
In the Season 4 premiere we saw Rick stick to his guns and maintain a violence-free life as a farmer. The illness and death in the cell block, coupled with Carol teaching the kids knife survival, was a wake up call for Rick. He's realized that there's no idyllic life to live in a zombie apocalypse. To survive is to be armed, so he gives Carl back his gun and puts his own holster back on, a symbolic move that "do whatever it takes to survive" Rick is back and farmer Rick died when he burned down the former pig pen.
As the narrative progresses into tonight's episode 'Isolated' there are a couple things we know will happen based on the previews. Carl will not only get his gun back but also his dad's sheriff hat, and he'll use both in the woods while protecting Hershel on a supplies run of some sort. Carl has been set up for some major action at some point so it's only a matter of time before that happens.
There will also be a supplies run involving Daryl, Michonne, Bob Stookey and Tyreese to a local college. While they're driving there a transmission will be picked up on the radio. Before the group has a chance to think about who might be broadcasting, Daryl slams the brakes in front of approximately 7,500 zombies blocking the road ahead. This has the makings for an incredible action scene based on the trailer snippets we have already seen.
There's also the matter of two deliberately scorched corpses, one of which is Karen. The thought is that someone from the council, Hershel perhaps, ordered these infected individuals killed before they could turn in the middle of the night. We should find out exactly who did this to Karen and the other one-line guy that worked on the fence by the time tonight's episode has ended. And there's no guarantee that it's the same person or persons dropping the rats outside the fence. All rumors right now suggest that person is in cahoots with the Governor who has yet to resurface after vanishing in the Season 3 finale.
